About Information Technology Services |
|
Information Technology Services grew out of the central computer facility located in Clement Hall. The D.W. Mattson Computer Center was named in honor of Professor Dale W. Mattson, who brought the first digital computer, an IBM 650, to the University in the 1960s. Information Technology Services provides computer resources, services, and support for instruction, research, and administration at Tennessee Technological University. Information Technology Services is divided into four sections: Academic Computer Support, Administrative Systems Support, Operations, and Systems Support. A campus-wide Ethernet local area network (LAN), which uses fiber optic media, makes computing services available across campus. Wide-area networking is also available, allowing users access to the Internet. Organization The Academic Computing Support (ACS) group consists of a manager, assistant manager, seven microcomputer specialists, one web and instructional support specialist, and one documentation/training/PC lab/site license specialist and approximately thirty student workers. ACS supports the use of available technologies to enhance and support instruction and research. ACS also supports University Computer Labs across campus by providing trained workers, documentation and training classes. ACS provides microcomputer support for offices across campus including software installation, new purchase consultation and software site licenses. The Administrative Systems Support group consists of a manager and seven programmer/analysts. Members support computing in administrative offices. They provide problem analysis, system design, programming, and program maintenance support. They install and maintain purchased software packages and assist offices in generating reports. The Operations group consists of a manager, one network specialist, four operators, and one computer lab technician. The technicians maintain microcomputers and the campus data communication network. The operators operate all the equipment in the operations room in CH226 and handle all hardware problems, including computer equipment repairs. They also distribute plots and printouts, schedule and monitor academic and administrative production work, and back-up the operating system and user files. The Systems Support
group consists of a manager and four analysts. Members provide internal support
for the university servers. They install and maintain the operating system and its
application software. They also identify and resolve system-related hardware and
software problems. Members are responsible for performance monitoring and
tuning, configuration, resource use, account
authorization and security monitoring. |
