2010 Master Plan Update Goals

Primary Goals for the 2010 Master Plan

  • Integrate Science Master Plan into Overall Master Plan
Recognizing that the science areas program included more scope than would likely be funded at one time, the program was divided into components to be constructed over time. The vision for the programs included multi-phasing with multiple options for the development of the Science areas. The first component is proposed to be placed in an area that would not disturb existing functions, other than parking, and would allow for the direction of subsequent building components to be determined in the future. This would allow the greatest flexibility for future decision makers to respond to current parameters.

  • Integrate Athletic Master Plan into Overall Master Plan
The development of the Athletic areas was not incorporated in the 2004 Master Plan. The athletic department subsequently developed an independent plan that outlined a comprehensive set of projects in most every area of the program. The development of the athletic facilities is primarily limited to the northwestern quadrant of the campus. As the Athletic department’s plans are to a great degree determined by the availability of funding for each particular project, the Master Plan Update incorporates the full scope of the current prioritized projects within the initial phase of the Master Plan implementation. A separate detailed Athletic Master Plan has also been developed for use specifically by the Athletic Department for fundraising.

  • Develop options for Tech Village
The third major directive of the Master Plan update involved the determination of a direction for the apartments that incorporated Tech Village. As the apartments are required to be sprinklered by 2015 to remain in operation, the questions included reuse, replacement and elimination of the facilities that had reached the end of the usable life as is. Through an initial study outlining these options, it was determined that renovation of the facilities was the most viable option. This project has been initiated in a phased approach through requests to the SBC.

  • Miscellaneous campus improvements as might be identified or the advancement of ongoing improvements.

  • Any Presidential directives that may be determined through the course of the planning exercise.
The scope of this update initially did not include an Academic space utilization study. As the THEC space utilization formula calculations were recently updated, a formal space analysis was commissioned in the fall of 2009 and completed in December. The study was developed by Dober, Lidsky, Mathey of Belmont, MA, who were also the authors of the assessment formula(s). The report may be found in its entirety as the last chapter of this Master Plan Update.
