IntroductionsMs. Wheatley called the meeting to order and requested for the members to introduce themselves. Professor Tolbert introduced Ms. Yvonne Gribble who was appointed as the Assistant Director for Records and Registration on October 2. Approval of the AgendaDr. Faw moved to approve the agenda, and Dr. Loutzenheiser seconded the motion. The agenda was approved. Approval of the March 23, 2000 MinutesDr. Cho moved to approved the March 23, 2000 minutes, and Dr. Groom seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as submitted. Reexamine Academic Dismissal for Students with 60 or More HoursMs. Wheatley recognized Professor Tolbert. Professor Tolbert reviewed the current academic dismissal policy with the committee. When students are dismissed from the University with less than 60 hours, they are encouraged to enroll in a community college to complete an associate degree. Students who have more than sixty hours are required to sit out four years regardless of how close they may be to graduating. The committee held discussion. Dr. Cho made the motion to reduce automatic denial for readmission to the University for a period of at least four years to two calendar years when a student is suspended for the third time. Dr. Groom seconded the motion. The motion was approved. This will become effective January 2001. Early Admission for High School StudentsMs. Wheatley recognized Professor Tolbert. Professor Tolbert reviewed with the committee the early admission policy. The Admissions Office does receive a couple of request a year from High School Freshmen and Sophomores wanting to attend. Current interpretation of the policy is that a student must be sixteen years old and students should be allowed to take more than one course. The committee held discussion. Dr. Cho made the motion to remove the following statement from the 2000 Undergraduate Catalog on page 30 under Early Admission "Early admission students usually enter in the summer term to demonstrate their ability to be successful in college by carrying 12-16 hours with a grade point average of 2.0 or better." Dr. Loutzenheiser seconded the motion. The motion was approved. Such Other MattersMs. Wheatley recognized Professor Tolbert. Professor Tolbert informed the committee that she had signed a number of drop cards for physical education courses. The only reason given to Professor Tolbert for student to not be allowed to drop a physical education course was to prevent seniors from lacking a physical education course for graduation. Dr. Bob Johnston, Interim Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education, does not need to sign off on these cards. Professor Tolbert would like for the students to be able to drop the physical education courses without her approval. Dr. Kumar made the motion to remove the following statement from the 2000 Undergraduate Catalog on page 51 under Physical Education, Marching Band, and Military Science "Once enrolled a student may not drop a required physical education course." Dr. Kozub seconded the motion. The motion was approved. Ms. Wheatley shared with the full committee that a subcommittee had discussed this summer to allow students to be automatically readmitted after their first suspension if they had sat at the required semester. Students who have been suspended one time and have sat out their required semester are rarely denied readmission. Dr. Loutzenheiser made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Dr. Kozub seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m. This page maintained by: Jerri
