Dr. Faw moved to approved the April 2, 2002 minutes, and Prof. Jared seconded the motion.  The minutes were approved as submitted.

Admission Policy

Ms. Wheatley recognized Professor Rebecca Tolbert.  Prof. Tolbert informed the committee that the Tennessee Higher Education (THEC) had requested for all institutions to review their admissions policies for possible revision.  The request had two major thrust.  The first was because of the changes taking place in developmental studies.  The second was to strengthen admission policies to encourage those students who would probably not be successfully at the university level to attend community colleges.  Prof. Tolbert provided statistics on TTU's Freshman class.  Our current funding is based on enrollment.  The proposed new funding formula will be based on quality instead of enrollment.

Prof. Tolbert explained the levels of remedial and development work.  With an ACT score below 15, students place in remedial work and those students who score between 15 and 18 are placed in developmental work.  Students who have less than a 19 in an ACT subtest will be required to take the Compass.  The Compass will be administered to attempt to eliminate students from the remedial and developmental coursework.  We will not admit students who have tested into three remedial courses.  If a student test into one remedial course, the student may take the course at Volunteer State in Livingston or at Nashville State here in Cookeville.  The remaining coursework may be taken at Tennessee Tech.

Our current admission policy is based on the high school core grade point average.  Students who have taken the SAT no longer need to take the ACT which was required in the past by the Admissions Office staff.

Before April, the Admissions and Credits Committee must recommend to the University what action will be taken to limit enrollment.  Discussion was held by the committee.  Dr. Glenn James will collect data on the pool of students who are admitted as an exception to the admission policy.

Such Other Matters

Ms. Wheatley recognized Ms. Gribble.  Ms. Gribble had been requested at the April meeting to check further into whether transfer students received credit for CLEP from the transcript or whether verification from the CLEP Board was required.  Transfer students receive credit from the transcript.  Discussion was held by the committee.  No action was needed by the committee.

Dr. James made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Dr. Faw seconded the motion.  The meeting was adjourned.
