Informational Item - AP Scores for Math 107

In a memorandum from Dr. Ablamowicz, he requested that a special exemption be given to Anna Herweyer from taking MATH 107 Elementary Probability and Statistics. Anna had taken the A.P. Statistics exam last year and received a score of 4. Evidence of her taking the exam is on her transcript.

Dr. Ablamowicz also requested that effective immediately a score of 4 or 5 on the A.P. Statistics Exam automatically course as a Course Exception for MATH 107 under the CEEB Policy for TTU.

Ms. Wheatly presented this as an information item only.

Change in Procedure for Scheduled Meetings

Prof. Tolbert requested that the committee procedures under V. Meetings be changed:

FROM:

A. Three regular meetings of the full Admissions and Credits Committee shall be held each academic year.

B. The Chairperson may call a special meeting when such action is deemed.

TO:

A. Two regular meetings, one per semester, of the full Admission and Credits Committee shall be held each academic year with additional meetings scheduled as needed.

Motion: Dr. Cho moved to approve the change. The motion was seconded by Dr. Carnal and carried.

The change will be forwarded on to the Administrative Council for approval.

Catalog Change from the Department of Music and Art

Dr. Groom requested the following change to be included in the new 2000 Undergraduate Catalog:

In Music Education and Music Therapy

Marching Band may be taken in lieu of physical education classes during the first two years of the college career.

Dr. Groom stated that this was needed to help clarify that students meeting an ensemble requirement are granted credit for the physical education requirement.

After some discussion, it was decided that no changes to the catalog were needed, but that a memo to the Graduation Office was needed to help clarify the catalog statement on page 43. Prof. Tolbert will work on the wording for that memo.

Motion: Prof. Tolbert proposed that the wording from Dr. Groom (see above) mean that the student who takes Marching Band does meet the physical education requirement. Dr. Groom moved to approve this statement. The motion was seconded by Dr. Cho and carried.

University Admission Standard - Educational

Program and Student Achievement

Prof. Tolbert stated that every five years we get planning assumptions from the Tennessee Board of Regents. We are to look at those and then make planning assumptions that are university specific.

The current planning assumptions for Educational Program and Student Achievement states:

2. "The strengthening of university admission standards will receive special priority with the goal of enhancing, in an academically responsible fashion, both the quality of academic programs and the rate of participation of Tennesseans in college."

Relative to this statement, Prof. Tolbert stated there has been discussion on campus as to whether there are students we have difficulty serving. There's always questions on whether university's should be doing developmental work. Prof. Tolbert stated that we have a lot of students who take one or two developmental courses, and some who enter taking all remedial courses. We are being able to serve these students, but at present do not have data to tell whether they succeed or not. This is an issue that needs to be examined, but not by the whole committee. Prof. Tolbert recommended a subcommittee of four to five persons be formed to examine this issue.

The following persons were suggested to serve on this subcommittee: Beth Mannle, Director, Academic Development Program; Sammie Young, Director, Disability Services; Alice Camuti, Director, Basic Business, Delores Wheatley, Academic Advisor-Athletics. Ms. Wheatley will select one additional faculty member and a chair for the group.

It was suggested that the subcommittee look at AAPP scores v.s. ACT scores and retention data.

Other Such Matters

For the benefit of new members, Prof. Tolbert briefly explained the process of serving on the subcommittee for appeals. The subcommittee is comprised of about four members and meets once a month if necessary. Only university employees serve on this subcommittee since it deals with students records.

The meeting adjourned at 3:25 p.m.
