Approval of the AgendaDr. Groom moved to approve the agenda, and Ms. Odom seconded the motion. The agenda was approved. Approval of the March 19 Minutes and the April 28 MinutesMs. Young moved to approve the March 19 and the April 28 minutes. The motion was duly seconded. The minutes were approved as submitted. Geology Statement in CatalogDr. Winfree recognized Dr. Larry Knox from the Department of Earth Sciences. The Earth Sciences Department faculty reviewed the College of Business's policy and policies of the Departments of Music and Art, Mathematics, and Computer Science. All of these units have similar policies in place. Because students currently are not prepared for upper-level courses the Department would like to implement the following policy: Geology majors must earn a grade of C or better in all required geology courses. Before enrolling in any required geology course, geology majors must have earned a grade of C or better in all geology courses prerequisite to that course. The statement, if approved, will be placed at the beginning of the geology (geol) course descriptions section in the 2000 Undergraduate Bulletin. This policy statement is to take effect at the beginning of the 1999 Fall Semester. All required geology courses taken prior to the 1999 Fall Semester will not be covered by this policy. Geology majors will be notified of this impending policy during the 1998/99 academic year. Dr. Groom spoke about the Department of Music and Art's policy. The committee discussed the proposed policy. Dr. Loutzenheiser moved to approve the statement as submitted to the committee. The motion was duly seconded. The statement was approved by the committee and will be forwarded to the Academic Council. CLEP cut-off scoresProfessor Tolbert stated that a request had been made for the committee to review the current cut-off scores the University has in place for the CLEP exam. Dr. Loutzenheiser brought up the problem of transfer students taking the exam at another institution and receiving credit but not having that credit recognized because of a lower cut-off score at the other institution. Dr. Winfree requested members to volunteer to serve on an ad hoc committee to review the University's scoring system for CLEP tests. Dr. Winfree said he would be willing to serve, and Dr. Bonner and Dr. Loutzenheiser volunteered to work with Dr. Winfree. The ad hoc committee will meet and report back to the committee during this academic year. Report from ad hoc committeeProfessor Tolbert shared with the committee items that had been discussed at the September 9 meeting regarding the readmission process. The Student Handbook does not have the process a student must complete in order to be readmitted after suspension. The letter which is sent out to suspended students every semester uses the wording to file an exception, but it is actually an appeal. The letter has been rewritten to take care of this problem, and Student Affairs has been notified regarding information being submitted to the office for the Student Handbook next fall. Professor Tolbert will share with the committee any changes before they are published. Labeling early report cards with less than a 2.0 before the retention table applies "unsatisfactory academics"Professor Tolbert questioned whether the University was leading students astray the first one to three semesters because we do not notify them that they are having academic difficulty. The Records Office has been asked to see if something could be put in place that would not affect the current warning, probation, and suspended message on the record for students who earn less than an 2.0. Professor Tolbert will report back to the committee at a later date. Such Other MattersDiscussion was held by the committee regarding the mailing of student grades to the home. Professor Tolbert stated that she would ask Mr. Rose to attend the next meeting to answer questions the committee has with this issue. The meeting was adjourned. This page maintained by: Jerri
