Ms. Coorts called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 1997, and asked everyone to introduce themselves to the committee. After introductions, Ms. Coorts welcomed everyone to the meeting. Approval of AgendaProfessor Hunter moved to approve the agenda and Dr. Boocker seconded the motion. The agenda was approved. Approval of the April 3 minutesProfessor Hunter moved to approve the April 3 minutes and Ms. Wheatley seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as submitted. Accepting credit from Tennessee Temple UniversityMs. Coorts presented the information on Tennessee Temple to the committee. Tennessee Temple University is accredited by the American Association of Bible Colleges, which is recognized by CHEA and endorsed by AARCO and ACE. Many Tennessee institutions accept credits from Tennessee Temple University, including the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee State University, and Chattanooga State Tech. They do not accept courses from the School of Bible and Christian Ministries. Dr. Mason moved to approve accepting credit from Tennessee Temple University and Mr. Marable seconded the motion. The motion was approved. The committee reviewed a request for exception from a student who had transferred to Tech this fall from Tennessee Temple University. He has requested that his transcript be reviewed before he has completed the 24 credit hours with a grade of "C" or better at the University. Since he earned fewer than 60 hours at Tennessee Temple, he was required to take the AAPP exam. Ms. Coorts made the recommendation that the University accept 30 credit hours from Tennessee Temple after reviewing the student's transcript. The student will need to repeat English Composition 101 and 102 since he is currently enrolled in ADP 082. Discussion was held by the committee. Dr. James moved to approve accepting the 30 credit hours from Tennessee Temple before the student completes 24 credit hours at Tennessee Technological University. Mr. Marable seconded the motion. The motion was approved. Clarification in academic fresh start policyMs. Coorts recognized Professor Tolbert who explained that the current policy grants academic fresh start in full when the student has started over and has completed 15 credit hours with a 2.0 or higher. Prior work will not be counted in the student's qpa. Professor Tolbert requested to add "and completed all of the developmental course work if any is needed" to the statement in that part of the policy. The problem with the policy was brought to her attention last spring by a records clerk who was updating a student's record to grant full academic fresh start when she realized the student had been suspended for failing an ADP course. Dr. Boocker moved to accept the addition to the statement and Ms. Wheatley seconded the motion. The motion was approved. The complete statement will read "Academic Fresh Start will be granted when the student has successfully earned the 15 hours of degree credit and completed all of the developmental course work if any is needed." Biology credit statement in catalogMs. Coorts recognized Professor Tolbert, who explained that a situation was brought to her attention this summer regarding a graduating student who had completed BIOL 101 and BIOL 111. The catalog states "Credit will not be given for both BIOL 101 and 111, or for both BIOL 102 and 112. Credit will not be given for BIOL 131 and any of the above courses." The Biology Department has approved exceptions for students to receive credit for BIOL 101 and 111 and BIOL 102 and 112 with one course being assigned elective credit. The Department meant by the statement that biology majors cannot take BIOL 101 and 111 or BIOL 102 and 112 as their biology series. They did not mean that a student could not receive credit for the other course. Professor Tolbert also checked with the Chemistry Department on this matter with their chemistry courses. The same statement is in the catalog regarding their courses. They also stated that the statement was for their majors. Basic Business advisors have been misinterpreting the statements and advising their students that they can use one course for the science sequence and the other course for an elective. After the incident this summer, it was decided that the statements need to be clarified in the catalog. The Chemistry Department plans to add "For chemistry majors" to the front of the statement in the catalog. Other colleges can do whatever they choose in accepting credit. We do not accept credit for meeting science requirement with 101 and 111. It will read "For chemistry majors a student may not earn credit in both CHEM 101 and 111, or both CHEM 102 and 112." No action was needed to be taken by the committee. Such other mattersSince there were no such other matters, the meeting was adjourned. This page maintained by: Jerri
