ESL 1020: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Course Objectives:

ESL 1020 is designed to enhance the student’s proficiency in the English language in an academic setting.

To  extend the student’s competence in basic communication skills, primarily in the written mode.

To build on the student’s awareness of and use of basic English structure and vocabulary

( including essential idioms) with an aim to improve writing skills in the academic setting.

 Specific Objectives:

Reading: to be able to read critically selected texts covering a broad range of subjects; to be able to discuss the readings intelligently both orally and in written form; to be able to skim and scan texts for specific information and linguistic analysis

Writing: to be able to use reading texts as rhetorical models and as points of departure for in-class and extramural compositions with the aim to improve control of content, organizational, and language skills

Speaking: to be able to present academic and social thoughts in public speaking settings with the aim to improve control of word choice, fluency,  tone, and pronunciation, to ensure comprehension of the listener.

Listening: to be able to clearly comprehend language with the aim to improve note taking skills and interpersonal relations in a business or academic setting.

 Dixson, Robert J. ESSENTIAL IDIOMS in ENGLISH: PHRASAL VERBS

      COLLOCATIONS. Longman, 2004.

 Folder, lined paper, pen with blue or black ink, computer disk.

 

Attendance:

Attendance is REQUIRED. Punctual class attendance is required at all scheduled class meetings and office conferences. More than three unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. The only valid reason for a class absence is a medical emergency, which must be substantiated with a  message from the infirmary or other physician. Make up work is allowed only at the discretion of the instructor.  Students must attend class for the entire scheduled time. Early dismissal will count as an academic hour (or more) absence.

Class Procedure:

Lecture and Recitation. Students are expected to have all assignments prepared according to schedule and to demonstrate their understanding orally and/or in writing. Late work may not be accepted.

Homework:  If the answers are in the back of the book, you may check your answers after doing the exercises on your own. Remember that you will be tested on idioms, etc.

Quizzes: A quiz over assigned material will be given each class meeting. Because this class meets only once a week, it is possible that more than one quiz may be given during the class period. There is no make up work on quizzes.

Compositions: Some compositions will be written in class; others will be composed outside of class. The grade on a composition handed in late will be reduced one letter. Compositions will be assigned weekly.

 Grading:

 90-100 = A         60-69 = D
 80-89   = B   Below 60 = F
 70-79   = C  

         

You must make at least a C to pass.

FINAL GRADE:

25% Quizzes, speeches, homework

50% Compositions, essays; Dictionary and Library Assignments

25%  Final Exam

  

Writing Center:

Students may get help with compositions in Foster Hall 409.

Students with a Disability:

Students with a disability requiring accommodations should contact the Office of Disability Services. An Accommodation Request should be completed as soon as possible, at the latest by the end of the first week of the course. That office is located in the Roaden University Center, Room 112. Tel. (931) 372-6119.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is stealing another person’s thoughts or ideas and will not be tolerated. Failure to cite your source is plagiarism. Students who plagiarize will receive an F for the assignment.

 Final Exam:

All students are required to take the Final Exam in order to pass the course.
