Academic Development Program Goals

 

Goals for Developmental Mathematics students are:

To develop problem-solving skills.
To learn to manage resources (time).
To assist in success in nonmathematical courses that require a grasp of algebraic fundamentals.
To view mathematics as a language of patterns.
To develop the ability to translate data into mathematical language and to interpret that language.

 

 Goals for Developmental Reading students:

To improve the fundamental thinking, reasoning, and language abilities that students need for academic success

To engage students in the active process of thinking

To practice thinking clearly about complex, controversial issues

To learn to relate critical thinking  abilities to daily life

To improve vocabulary and reading ability

To practice critical analysis and communication with others

 

Goals of Developmental Writing are:

to provide the groundwork of basic communications skills so that students are able to write on a level that will permit them to function successfully in their chosen fields of student in the university community
to provide students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the work required in freshman composition
to provide students with the opportunity to acquire an understanding of levels of usage and of appropriate usage for various situations
to provide students with basic skills and assurance in using standard conventions of written English
to provide students with the background for recognizing writing as a process involving collecting ideas, drafting, revising
to provide students with the skills for accomplishing basic research
to provide students with the opportunity to develop the ability to respond actively and imaginatively to literature
