Homecoming Concert

Tickets are on sale now for the Honky-Tonk Tailgate Party concert
at Tennessee Tech University's Hooper Eblen Center Nov. 5

The concert, sponsored in part by 94.7 The Country Giant and IWC Cash & Carry, will feature a group of chart-topping country music artists who joined together to form the Honky-Tonk Tailgate Party Tour: Daryle Singletary, Chad Brock, Jeff Carson and Rhett Akins. Tickets are available online from TTUsports.com or by calling the TTU ticket office at 372-3941 or 800-825-3948.

The concert highlights a weekend of Wild West-themed events for TTU Homecoming.

According to promotional materials, the Honky Tonk Tailgate Party tour is a unique concert experience offering more than two hours of non-stop hits from some of country music’s favorite artists. All four performers have had, and continue to produce, popular country music that spans the broad spectrums of country styles. The format of the show includes four separate performances followed by a culmination of all four artists meeting on stage to sing country and rock outlaw favorites.

Daryle Singletary, whose CD "That's Why I Sing This Way?" features performances from artists like Merle Haggard, George Jones and Dwight Yoakum, is often called a "neo-traditionalist" singer. His gravelly, baritone voice featured in smash hit singles "I Let Her Lie" and "Too Much Fun" have earned him much acclaim on the country music landscape.

Chad Brock's namesake album project produced the number-one single "Ordinary Life" and earned him a spot touring with Alan Jackson. His follow-up album featured "Yes!," another country chart-topping hit.

Jeff Carson hit the charts with his number-one hit "Not On Your Love" and the smash ballad "The Car," which won the ACM Video of the Year award. His 2001 hit "Real Life" also won acclaim and soared onto country charts.

Rhett Akins has had several hits, including his first number-one single, "That Aint My Truck." That success was duplicated with the hit "She Said Yes" and second first-place single, "Don't Get Me Started."

The concert is open to the public. Ticket prices range from $25 on the floor to $15 in the "bowl" reserved seats, and $10 top-level seating. TTU students will have the opportunity to buy one top-level ticket each for $5. Limited seating is available at each level.

Proceeds from the concert ticket sales will benefit TTU Athletics.

Tickets are available by phone or online. Tickets purchased online can be printed at home or held at will-call. For more information, visit http://ticketing.tntech.edu/production/concert/honkytonk/.

TTU again ranked a Top Public University by U.S.News & World ReportBest Colleges

For the fourth time, U.S.News & World Report magazine ranked Tennessee Tech University one of the "Top Public Universities in the South" for its ranking category. And this year TTU is the only Tennessee school included on the short list of 11 institutions.

TTU is also again ranked as one of the "Best Universities" overall in its category, which includes both public and private schools, for the South. TTU is the highest ranked Tennessee public university in that category as well. This is the sixth year the university has earned some type of top-level rankings by the publication. Most recently TTU was named a top southern public university in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

"These types of rankings are good indicators of our priorities as an institution," said TTU President Bob Bell. "We have traditionally made the success of our students our primary focus, and that is reflected here. Our entire campus should be proud of this achievement."

The category in which TTU is ranked is "Universities-Master's." According to the magazine, universities included in this group "provide a full range of undergraduate and master's programs" and only a small number of doctoral programs, if any. TTU offers three different Ph.D.-level programs. Schools in this category are also ranked within four geographic areas, and only 64 were included among the Best in the South.

TTU again chosen as a Best Southeastern College by The Princeton ReviewPrinceton Review

Tennessee Tech University has once again been selected by The Princeton Review to receive its "Best Southeastern College" designation.

TTU earned the same recognition last year for the first time. The most recent ranking was released in September. Of 17 schools listed for all of Tennessee, TTU was one of only four public universities to earn the designation.

"We believe these schools uphold the standards of our Best Southeastern College distinction and provide students with a wide breadth of excellent schools to consider," said Robert Franek, publisher and editorial director for The Princeton Review.

To qualify for inclusion, each school had to meet standards for academic excellence and allow its students to participate in anonymous surveys to provide opinion-driven profiles. According to The Princeton Review web site, the regional rankings provide a way to "raise awareness of academically excellent but lesser-known colleges with students looking to study within a specific geographic area."

TTU adds two national "Best Value" rankings to recent accoladesAmerica's 100 Best College Buys seal

Tennessee Tech University has been selected for inclusion in Princeton Review's America's Best College Values 2006 guidebook, and also recently named one of America's 100 Best College Buys by Institutional Research & Evaluation Inc.

Both rankings earn TTU a designation as one of the nation's best college educations for the cost. The Princeton Review guidebook is scheduled for distribution in Spring 2006; the America's 100 Best College Buys annual report was distributed in September.

The honors come on the heels of TTU's most recent 2006 ranking as one of the Top Public Schools in the South by U.S.News & World Report and as a Best Southeastern College by The Princeton Review for 2006.

"This recognition tops an already outstanding year," said TTU President Bob Bell. "We're getting used to being recognized for our excellent programs and service, so it's nice to be noticed for our academic value as well.

"Our campus vision focuses on the life-long success of our students, and that starts here. Our alumni have always known what an excellent value a TTU education is, and these awards are official representations of that fact."

The America's Best College Values guidebook is distributed annually by Princeton Review and Random House publishers. This is TTU's first year to be included in the book.

Students offered a second chance at HOPE scholarships

A new scholarship coupled with a recent revision of the rules regarding the Tennessee HOPE scholarship will allow some Tennessee Tech University students second chances at regaining hope for their futures.

Since the creation of the HOPE scholarship in 2004, students whose grades dropped below a 3.0 GPA lost the scholarship with no means of ever getting it back. One couple, who choose to remain unidentified, feared some students with tremendous financial need might be deserving of a second chance and have no where to turn.

The donors placed $500,000 in an endowment to provide $30,000 each year to select sophomores, juniors and seniors who have lost the HOPE scholarship with a chance to continue their education.
