Don't miss
the Tennessee Tech-Auburn tailgate party and game, Nov.
3
| |
Join
other TTU alumni and friends at the pre-game tailgate
party at Auburn University on Nov. 3!
|
| |
It’s official! We've scheduled a tailgate party prior
to the TTU-Auburn football game on November 3 at Auburn's
Jordan-Hare Stadium. The tailgate
party will begin at 10:30 a.m. Central time, and game time
is at 1 p.m.
"In addition to Tennessee Tech alumni in the Auburn
area, we're expecting a large group of people, including
many loyal TTU Athletics supporters who plan to make the
trip to Auburn," says Alumni
Relations Director Tracey Duncan.
This is an exciting opportunity for the Golden Eagles,
TTU staff and fans! While the Golden Eagles have faced 19
Bowl Subdivision teams (formerly I-A) in the past 22 years,
the game at Auburn will be the first for Tech against an
opponent from the Southeastern Conference in 56 years.
Nationally ranked in the top 10 last year, the Auburn Tigers
are expected to return to the rankings and make a challenge
for the 2007 SEC Championship.
The game, which is also Auburn's Homecoming, is expected
to be a sell-out. Be sure to look for more information and
for the exact location of the tailgate party in the October
issue of Tech Connect or check the Alumni Relations
web site at www.ttualumni.org
as the game date approaches.
Support
your Golden Eagles football team!

Why
choose to be an alumni mentor?

Ken Hunter |
"Transitioning
from adolescense to adulthood, student to professional,
requires more than the tools picked up from the classroom
or personal experience. We benefit by those who walked
the path that stands before us. Mentorship enables me
to share lessons and help students understand the expectations
that face them." |
Becoming a mentor is easy;
you just need a user name and password. To get started,
call Career Services at (931) 372-3232 or e-mail career@tntech.edu.
You can also sign up on the Career Services web site at
www.tntech.edu/career/.
For more reasons to consider becoming an alumni
mentor, see the Spring 2007 issue of Visions magazine.

| Plans
continue for the Class of 1957 50th Reunion set for Sept.
6-8
Plans
are continuing for an exciting weekend full of events in
honor of our Class of 1957 Golden Grads!
For your reunion, we're putting
together a special memory book for each classmember. While
a number of you have returned your memory page, we'd like
for everyone, even if you won't be able to attend, to have
their page included in the book. All memory pages
must be returned by Friday, Aug. 3, to be included in the
book.
You can download
and print a PDF of the memory book page or
complete the memory book sheet that was included the information
packet you should have already received. Please call us
at (800) 889-8730 if you have not received your packet.
In addition, if any of you have
snapshots from your years at Tennessee Tech that you'd like
to submit, we'll try to include them as well. Although we
make every effort to return all photos, you may want to
send duplicates and keep the originals.
We
hope to see you at the reunion! |

| "My
Favorite Professor"
Dr.
Vernon Allen and Dr. Chris McGowan
I'm not sure he was my favorite at the time,
but certainly the most influential professor I had at Tech
was Dr. Vernon Allen in the Chemistry Department. His bearing
and erudition left an indelible mark on all the students who
ever got to know him. He gave me the opportunity to assist
in teaching freshman labs during my junior year, and actually
made me the lab instructor during my senior year. I had expected
to assist one of the professors, and when I asked Dr. Allen
who I would be working FOR as an assistant, he replied "You're
it, baby." Although I did not go in to teaching, I learned
that I could teach and that I really enjoyed it. In the years
after I left Tech, Dr. Allen became the face of my memories.
As many Chemistry alumni already know,
he died of cancer several years ago. He is one of the few
people I have ever known that I have consciously tried to
emulate.
I was personally closest to Dr. Chris McGowan,
who left Tech and is now the Dean of Science and Mathematics
at Southeast Missouri State University. Dr. McGowan took me
under his wing and nurtured my interest in analytical chemistry,
and I ultimately earned a doctorate in the field and embarked
on a career in industry. Dr. McGowan consistently treated
me as a colleague as well as a student and greatly influenced
my professional aspirations and development.

Dr. Robert Fort
I attended TTU from the Fall of 1967 to graduation
in the Spring of 1971...then graduate work and my M.A. from
1972 to 1973.
The one professor that automatically comes to
mind is that of Dr. Robert Fort, of the Health and Physical
Education Department. I had Dr. Fort in many of my undergraduate
classes, as well as during my masters program. Dr. Fort was
my advisor in graduate school.
Dr. Fort always dealt with students in a positive
manner. He was quite helpful in many ways. I will always remember
him as one of, if not the, favorite professor I had while
attending TTU.
Thanks,

Dr.
Melissa Comer
I would like to submit Dr. Melissa Comer as
my favorite professor. She made our Literacy Block in the
TTU Teacher Education Program at Roane
State Community College so much fun and so interesting! We
learned so much and I have been able to apply many of the
interesting activities she taught to my class now that I am
an elementary teacher. Everyone should be so fortunate to
have an absolute wonder as Dr. Comer is!
