"My Favorite Professor"

Dr. Horace Raper and Dr. Milos Sebor

In terms of how my life has been shaped since I graduated from Tech in 1962, I'd have to say:

Horace Raper
Dr. Horace Raper

Most favorite was Horace Raper. He challenged me to give my best. I gave it and discovered something in me that I did not know existed -- academic determination. Dr. Raper set high standards for his students and for himself, and he helped us find ways to meet them and we discovered a deep appreciation for him. He brought human experiences to history rather than institutional ones, and I found new reasons, compelling reasons to be an historian. More than that, over the last 45 years I have always conducted my classes as I imagined Dr. Raper would have done. And like Dr. Raper, I have learned from my students, both as their professor and as their mentor.

Milos Sebor
Dr. Milos Sebor

Milos Sebor is a close second -- so close, it is hard to separate him from Dr. Raper. Dr. Sebor was my German professor. He taught me European manners, European tastes, what real gentlemen are like, how all of us are unique with unique human stories, and above all he fastened my love for the German language. Quite often, when deeply engaged in a conversation (usually in Austria) one will ask about what made me want to know German. My response is simply this: I had always liked foreign languages, favored French and German most, but once under the tutelage of Dr. Milos M. Sebor, I fell in love with German. It's been my companion as door after door has opened to the human side of European history.

These two men have been responsible for changing my life.

It isn't easy to always pick a favorite at Tech. The reason is simple. I had the best professors I have ever known or worked with at Tech. All of them were very influential in my life. Each helped me develop a serious appreciation for their disciplines. I am still in love with the sciences as well as the arts -- thanks to my Tech professors. They taught me the value of their disciplines, not just the raw information, and made their disciplines part of my life and consequently part of the life of the more than 4,000 students who have been exposed to the Dr. R. (a.k.a. Raper and Sebor) treatment. In this story, I hope I have in some way helped repay Tech and them for what I owe.
