Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek-letter organization established in America
by African-American women. Founded in 1908 at Howard University, Washington,
D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha functions as an instrument for enriching the social
and intellectual aspects of college life for African-American women. The
sorority encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, and promotes
unity, friendship, and service to all mankind. Xi Alpha chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at Tennessee Technological University, was
reactivated Spring 2001.
