General and Basic Engineering

Anything But Basic.

General and Basic Engineering serves two purposes for engineering students: It provides an interdisciplinary, broadly focused major studying concepts related to several engineering disciplines (Bachelor of Science in Engineering, General Engineering), and also serves as a first-year home for students who are still discovering their passion for a specific engineering discipline.

If you choose General Engineering as a major, you will take courses in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering as well as the math and science courses common to all engineering majors, while being well-prepared for the national Fundamentals of Engineering Examination. General engineering enables students to understand engineering practice in the context of a variety of fields.

Careers for the Common Good

Students in a classroomEmployers in general engineering often look for graduates with skills in problem-solving and project management, as well as a strong grasp of physics, design systems and math. Graduates of the general engineering programs enter a diverse spectrum of technical and non-technical fields in all sectors of the economy, such as public policy, policy analysis, technical sales, and other fields where an advanced technology background is an advantage.
