I have served on the Board of Trustees for 3 years.
The Reputation of the engineering program. Also, the reasonable cost and size of campus in respect to the student body.
I feel when parents are involved in the education system, it makes for accountability for all involved (i.e. student, parent, school).
The TTUPA helps parents who might have similar concerns or questions to connect with each other. Also as students transition from high school to college, it helps parents feel more involved.
I would like to see TTUPA continue to build the number of memberships from incoming freshman parents, but, I would also like to see the retention numbers increase. Developing new programs to help parents and students be more involved in the campus and programs. I would also like to see the TTUPA eventually fund 5 scholarships.
I have one son who is a junior civil engineering major.
I think it is difficult for parents to transition from their roles as caretakers to being more of an advisor who is there if needed.
Try to give your students a semester to get acclimated. Schedule a time to talk with your student by phone at least once a week and don't interrogate them. Let the student tell you what is going on with them. Learn to text! Sometimes your student will text with you when other students are around because they might be embarrassed to talk on the phone.
