This is my second year serving on the Board of Trustees.
My favorite part of TTU is even though TTU is a state school it has a private school feel.
I chose to serve on the board of trustees because parents can make a very positive contribution to their children's college years.
I see the TTUPA in next 5 to 10 years really growing and having a bigger, stronger voice, more diversified systems to engage the student, university and parent in success partnerships.
I would like to see TTUPA continue to build the number of memberships from incoming freshman parents, but, I would also like to see the retention numbers increase. Developing new programs to help parents and students be more involved in the campus and programs. I would also like to see the TTUPA eventually fund 5 scholarships.
I currently have a student majoring in nutrition.
One of the struggles that parents face with college students is identity, and losing the authoritative voice in their child's life, while wishing healthy autonomy for their child.
My advice to other parents of college students is to simply let your child discover themselves at college. Smothering a child will not help a child to grow. Strive to be a resource for your child to bounce ideas off of, while not giving them the "correct answer". Let your child know you are proud that their child is succeeding at become an adult capable of making life choices.
