Sample Trombone Warm-Up Routine

  1. Tonguing/Long Tones (=60-80)

    Continue Chromatically down to
  2. Lip-Slurs (=66-80)
    a. 3 Note Slur

    Continue in all positions down to


    b. 4 Note Slur

    Continue in all positions up to

    c. 5 Note Slur - Play in all 7 positions
  3. Lip Flexibilities/Tonguing (=72-96)
    Use gentle articulations at a dynamic of mezzo-piano to mezzo-forte.
    Rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute at each double bar line.

  4. Repeated Articulations/Flexibilities (=172-184+)
    Continue in all 7 positions

    4b.     Play in all 7 positions

  5. Tonguing on a Repeated Pitch (=96+)

      Continue chromatically down to

      Rest for 1 minute, then begin here and eascend chromatically

      Continue upwards to

  6. Lip Flexibilites (=ca. 80)
    Play examples in all 7 positions




  7. Audition Scale Pattern
    • Be prepared to play this pattern in all keys using a variety of articulations & dynamics.
    • Set your tempo so that all scales sound comfortable. Play your scales at the tempo that you can play the most difficult scale so that you do not show your weaknesses during an audition.
