History

Located in Clement Hall, the D.W. Mattson Computer Center is named in honor of Professor Dale W. Mattson, who brought the first digital computer, an IBM 650, to the University in the 1960s. Providing computer resources, services, and support for instruction, research, and administration at Tennessee Technological University, the Computer Center is divided into four sections: Academic Computing Support, Administrative Systems Support, Operations, and Systems Support.

The Computer Center houses several computer systems manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). These systems include a VAX 7620, an AlphaServer 4100 5/466 and two AXP 3000-M600s. The Center also has terminals, workstations, and microcomputers.

A campus-wide Ethernet local area network (LAN), which uses fiber optic media, makes computing services available across campus. Wide-area networking is also available, allowing users access to the Internet and TECnet.

Organization

The Academic Computing Support (ACS) group consists of a manager, two microcomputer specialists, a statistical consultant, one academic analyst/consultant and approximately forty student workers. The principle areas of academic computing support are consultation and education. Members support computing related to instruction and research, as well as manage the student computer labs. ACS also publishes The Computing Connection and consults with faculty, staff, and students on hardware and software purchases.

The Administrative Systems Support group consists of a manager and six programmer/analysts. Members support computing in administrative offices. They provide problem analysis, system design, programming, and program maintenance support. They install and maintain purchased software packages and assist offices in generating reports.

The Operations group consists of a manager, four operators, and three computer lab technicians. The technicians maintain microcomputers, terminals, and the campus data communication network. The operators operate all the equipment in the operations room in CH226 and handle all hardware problems, including computer equipment repairs. They also distribute plots and printouts, schedule and monitor academic and administrative production work, and back-up the operating system and user files.

The Systems Support group consists of a manager and three analysts. Members provide internal support for VAX/VMS hardware and software. They install and maintain the system and its application software. They also identify and resolve system-related hardware and software problems. Members are responsible for performance monitoring and tuning, configuration, resource use, accounting of current VAX services, account authorization, security monitoring, network management, and evaluating, recommending, and installing software.
