VMS Mail Updates

We have recently upgraded the Internet Mail Server and are aware of two problems that people are experiencing.

Problem 1: When your PC Mail program (i.e. Netscape, Outlook Express) attempts to check your mail on Gemini or TTUMIS you receive an error pertaining to your password.

Solution: You should log into your Gemini or TTUMIS account using the Telnet program (which can be found by going to the START button, click on Programs, and it is located in the Internet folder.)

Once you have logged in to Gemini or TTUMIS you will be prompted to change your password.

After you have changed your password in Gemini or TTUMIS go into your PC Mail program and put the new password into the Mail Options or Preferences.

For security reasons, you are required to change you password every 90 days through Gemini or TTUMIS. You will also have to change your password in your PC Mail program every 90 days.

Problem 2: You are not able to send mail from home using a PC Mail program (i.e. Netscape or Outlook Express) through Gemini or TTUMIS. This applies to people who have their PC Mail program at home configured to check their Gemini or TTUMIS account using their Internet Service Provider (i.e. US Internet, MultiPro) account.

Solution: You should change your SMTP Outgoing mail server (NOT the POP3 or IMAP Incoming mail server) to the setting that your Internet Service Provider has provided. You can continue to get your email through Gemini or TTUMIS.

For security reasons, you can no longer send mail through the Gemini or TTUMIS SMTP server from off campus when using a PC Mail program.

These issues evolved out of an enhancement to the security of the Gemini and TTUMIS mail system. These enhancements were included in the recent updates made to our mail system.
