When we find ourselves in a financial crunch like the one the University is currently facing, we have to use the dollars we have as efficiently as possible. Sometimes this means finding new cost-effective alternatives for existing services. That's what the Computer Center has had to do with the old CalComp plotter.
The CalComp has faithfully provided plotting from such VAX applications as TechPlot, Matlab, and ACSL for over ten years. But, as with many of us, old age becomes expensive. While maintenance costs have steadily increased on the CalComp, actual usage by students, faculty, and staff has dwindled to almost nothing. Most users have already found other printing and plotting solutions they like better. Because of this decreasing use, the expensive maintenance contract on the CalComp has expired. Those still using the CalComp may find that the laser printers meet most of their needs for smaller black and white plots.
