Creating a Document

Opening an existing file

  1. Select View
    Note current settings for page view, toolbars, and ruler
  2. Select File­Open
  3. Select drive w:\ , subdirectory ttu , subdirectory wfwclass
    Please note that this file is available only in the D.W. Mattson Computer Center labs (CH313, CH215, BN207, HH111, and LM113).
  4. Select begwp.doc as the document to open

Using the Ruler Bar

Word Toolbar

Entering text

  1. Press [CTRL]+[End] to move the insertion point to the end of the document
  2. Type in the text as shown below
  3. Remember to press [Enter] only between paragraphs or to create a blank line
  4. Please note that the image on your screen will not be identical to the one shown below

Saving a Document

Save the document

  1. Select File-Save As
  2. Type gonzales.doc in the Save As box as the filename for this letter
  3. Filenames may be from 1-8 characters and may contain the letters a-z and numbers 0-9 , and the underscore (_). No special characters or spaces are allowed. The extension .doc is automatically added by Word.

Editing a Document

Use the keyboard to move the insertion point

 Left or right one character      Right or left arrow
 Up or down one line              Up or down arrow
 Left or right one word           [CTRL] + right or left arrow
 Up or down one paragraph         [CTRL] + up or down arrow
 Previous screen                  [PgUp]
 Next screen                      [PgDn]
 Top of next page                 [ALT] + [CTRL] + [PgDn]
 Top of preceding page            [ALT] + [CTRL] + [PgUp]
 End of current line              End

Insert new text into the document

  1. Place the mouse pointer immediately after the a in identify a... of the last sentence of the first paragraph and single-click the left mouse button; note the cursor appears
  2. Type n alternate

Correcting text

  1. Place the insertion point after The at the beginning of the second paragraph.
  2. Press [Ctrl]+[Backspace] to remove the word The
  3. Type Our
  4. Double-click on the word player to select it
  5. Type CD-ROM

Use the Undo feature to reverse an editing action

  1. Select Edit­Undo to restore the word player
  2. Select Edit­Redo to restore CD-ROM
  3. Update the file after making changes
  4. Click on the Save icon in the button bar

Using the Spelling Checker

Check the spelling in the document

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Home] to move to the top of the document
  2. Select Tools­Spelling
  3. Make necessary changes to correct the spelling in the letter
  4. Click on OK return to the document

Using the Thesaurus

Find a synonym

  1. Double-click on assured in first sentence of the third paragraph
  2. Select Tools­Thesaurus
  3. Select confident
  4. Select Replace

Formatting a Document

Apply a type style to a block of text

  1. Double-click on not in the line "600ms access time is not an..." in the second sentence of the second paragraph to select it
  2. Select Italic from the Button Bar
  3. Double-click on very in the first sentence of the third paragraph to select it
  4. Select Bold from the Button Bar
  5. Place the cursor in front of the b in bid proposal
  6. Press and hold the [Shift] key, and press the right arrow key to select bid proposal in the next-to-last sentence of the same paragraph
  7. Select Underline from the Button Bar
  8. Place the cursor in front of the O in October 30
  9. Press and hold the [Shift] key, and press the right arrow key to select October 30
  10. Select Bold from the Button Bar

Apply more than one type of style to a block of text

  1. Double-click on not in the line "600ms access time is not an..." to select it
  2. Select Bold from the Button Bar
  3. Deselect not by single-clicking on white space

Remove type styles from selected text

  1. Select the bolded and italicized word not in the same line
  2. Select Italic from the Button Bar
  3. Deselect not by pressing an arrow key

Copy or Move blocks of text using Edit

  1. Select the first sentence of the third paragraph
  2. Select Edit­Cut
  3. Move the insertion point to the end of the first paragraph; press the spacebar
  4. Select Paste from the button bar
  5. Click on Save in the button bar to update your file

Adding special features

Changing justification

  1. Select the entire document by triple-clicking in the selection bar
  2. Select the Full justification icon on the button bar

Changing line spacing

  1. Select the first paragraph by double-clicking in the selection bar
  2. Select Format­Paragraph
  3. Select 1.5 for Line Spacing
  4. Click OK

Changing left and right margins

  1. Select the entire document by triple-clicking in the selection bar
  2. Double-click in the vertical ruler to call up Page Setup
  3. Press TAB twice to move to the setting box for the left margin
  4. Type 2
  5. Click OK
  6. Double-click in the vertical ruler to call up Page Setup
  7. Press TAB twice to move to the setting box for the left margin
  8. Type 1.5
  9. Click OK

Printing and Exiting

Print the document

  1. Click on Save in the button bar to update your file
  2. Select File­Print or click the Print icon in the toolbar
  3. Select OK from the dialog box

Exit the package

  1. Select File­Exit
