Why Study Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a rewarding, hands-on, people-oriented profession. Civil engineers have a positive impact on the quality of people’s lives. People drive on the highways they design, drink water from the treatment plants they design, live and work in the buildings and structures they design, and discard their used water and waste materials in the facilities they design.

Civil engineers do not design these facilities in a vacuum. Frequently they must visit a site, make measurements, and get their hands dirty. They must work with members of the community, public officials, state and federal regulators, and other professionals to design facilities that satisfy the public and meet all regulations and codes. Because the facilities they design affect public health and safety, they have a responsibility to adhere to the highest ethical values.

Are you a potential Civil Engineer?

Although civil engineering is a rewarding profession, it is not for everyone. When they were young, most civil engineers tinkered with things and took them apart to see how they worked. They were good at math and science in school. They liked working outside and working with other people. If this describes you, you should look into a career in civil engineering.
