The logo for the Center for Energy Systems Research, provides an easy to recognize symbol to be associated with the center. The flame and lightning bolt have their genesis in the coal-fired power plant which will always be an important aspect of center research. The flame represents the combustion boiler while the lightning bolt represents the electrical power produced in the turbine; Together they are an "Energy System". Of course the center will research many other energy systems but its symbol will reflect the center's roots as the Center for Electric Power. The logo has also been likened to a torch which is appropriate because research should always be an illuminating process.
