The Department of Chemical Engineering offers programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering. The undergraduate chemical engineering program is accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Additionally, for more motivated students, a Distinction in the Major option is available to enhance the B.S. degree as well as a fast-track (5-year) B.S./M.S. option.
Students majoring in Chemical Engineering must meet the College of Engineering requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree as well as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology requirements. This requires the completion of credit hours in composition, literature, humanities, social science, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In addition, students are required to take "Programming for Engineers" and "Introduction to Engineering." Chemical Engineering majors are required to take 24 hours of chemistry (and earn a minor in that area) as well as 42 hours of chemical engineering core courses. In order to relate theory and correlation developed in lecture courses to practical application, students take four chemical engineering laboratory courses. Nine hours of technical electives are also required that allow the student some curricular flexibility.
High School Preparation
All Tennessee Tech freshman applications are considered within a competitive admission process for Summer, Fall and Spring semesters. For admission to the College of Engineering, applicants should meet the following minimum criteria:
- GPA of at least 2.35
- ACT composite of at least 20
