(Fundamentals in Engineering) Exam
Each year, a new generation of engineers enters the workplace to join the thousands already in practice, but only a small percentage of those engineers are committed to becoming Professional Engineers. The prestigious designation of Professional Engineer (PE) indicates a person who is licensed to practice engineering and allowed opportunities not afforded to the larger engineering population.
The benefits of a Professional Engineer License include:
- A competitive edge over other candidates
- A higher salary potential than other employees
- More prestigious projects with increased job mobility
- A portable license honored in other states
- The ability to open a private practice and consult
To become licensed you must:
- Graduate from an accredited engineering program
- Pass the FE Exam
- Obtain four years professional engineering experiene
- Pass the PE Exam
The Fundamentals of Engineering exam, commonly called the FE or EIT (Engineer-in-Training), is the first of two national exams you must pass to become licensed as a PE. The FE covers engineering concepts from undergraduate classes and is typically taken by college seniors. The exam is administered at the state level and offered every April and October.
The FE exam is eight hours long with 120 general questions in the morning and 60 questions in the afternoon. During the afternoon portion, examinees opt to take a general exam or one of the following discipline-specific exams: chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, or mechanical. To pass the exam you must receive a scaled score of 70 out of a posible 100.
The Fall 2007 FE exam will be given October 27, 2007. The application deadline is Friday, May 4 2007. Applications should be picked up (and returned) in the Chemical Engineering Department office.
Applications should be fully typed or neatly printed (except for signature and date).
A personal check, money order, or cashier’s check for $50.00 must also accompany the application. Checks should be made out to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. No cash will be accepted. General FE review sessions are organized by the local Tau Beta Pi Chapter prior to the exams. In addition, discipline specific reviews are scheduled within the Chemical Engineering Department. Watch bulletin boards for times and locations.
All seniors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity!
