October 21st through October 27th has been declared by Proclamation - National Chemistry Week by the Mayor of Cookeville, TN in conjunction with The 25th Anniversary of National Chemistry Week.  Dr. Dan Swartling will showcase "A Double Helix and Nanostructure Balloon Display" in the glassed in area of the Bryan Fine Arts Building.  Guest Lecturer, Dr. Amanda Crook, will discuss "Green Chemistry" in Foster Hall from 5-6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24th.  Both of these events are free and open to the public.

Saturday, October 27, 2012 The "Golden Helix 5K" starting with a boom at 10AM. Join us for the 3.1 mile walk/run on Saturday, October 27th. The 8:00-9:30 AM packet pickup is in front of Prescott Hall at the corner of Stadium Avenue and W. 10th Street. The clubs are looking for door prizes (food coupons, goodies, etc.). If you'd like to help sponsor a TTU student to run, you may write a $25 check to "ASBMB Golden Helix 5K" and put it in my box. This is a joint event with the ASBMB, Lions Club, and ChemMED club.  November 3, 2012 is Homecoming Weekend watch the Tech Times and here for announcements or check out http://www.tntech.edu/studentactivities/homecoming/ On Saturday, Nov. 3rd, beginning at 10:30 a.m. the chemistry department will be under the big tent adjacent to the football stadium at what is referred to as "Tailgate Park".  Alumni, students, friends and their families are invited to stop by as there will be activities for all ages. Stay and enjoy the game between Tech and Eastern Illinois beginning at 1:30 p.m.  Afterwards, join us back at Foster Hall in Room 406 for a variety of chili dishes and desserts.  While there, feel free to tour the department.

Friday, October 19, 2012, and Friday, February 1, 2013 DEADLINE: Call for proposals The Student Research Grants Committee of the Chemistry Department at Tennessee Tech University is soliciting student proposals for funding for 2012-13 academic year and summer 2013.  Proposals are due by the posted due date unless it falls on a weekend. Otherwise, proposals are due on the following Monday.  All proposals must be hand-delivered to the Main Office of Chemistry Department, Foster Hall, Room 219.

News Items

Congratulations to Dr. Amanda Crook and Dr. Sri Bharat Madireddy  for earning their PhD's in Fall and Summer, respectively.  Each will be staying on at TTU this year with one year appointments as faculty. Welcome Aboard!"

Parent Day 2011:  On September 24, 2011 the department hosted students and their families (and friends) in Foster Hall with chemical demonstrations and LN2 ice cream. It was standing room only with as many as 250 in attendance. On Saturday, over 8,000 people were at the football game saturday night to watch Tech defeat SEMO.

Race for the Golden Helix 5K:  On September 16, 2011 the ASBMB Affiliates hosted a 5K Run.   Proceeds from the event where donated to fund undergraduate student research projects in the TTU Chemistry Department. The money raised affords more opportunites we can provide students. Student research funds are typically used to purchase chemicals and equipment necessary for completing a research project. Students travel to various professional conferences and poster sessions to present this research.  Over 80 participants attended.  For race results go to  The Results.

The 17th Annual Fall FunFest in Dowtown Cookeville will be September 7 and 8, 2012. The funfest includes live music, the Cookeville Cook-off, a 5k and 10k run and other fun activities for the whole family. For detailed information go to http://www.fallfunfest.com.  On Saturday, September 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. our department will host hands-on science a "Stations of Imagination".  The booths will be in front of Maddux Station Retaurant at the corner of Spring Street and Washington Avenue 319 East Spring Street.ent, Foster Hall, Room 219.
