The quarterly College of Business newsletter
    March 2007

Greetings from the College of Business!
We've had a great school year so far and wanted to share some of our stories with you. One of our major accomplishments was a successful accreditation visit by AACSB. The impact of private funding for our renovation effort, for scholarships, and for faculty support made a strong impression on the visitation team. Thanks to all who have contributed both financially and with your personal efforts over the years to make our college better.
We hope you enjoy the articles below.
    Bob Niebuhr, Dean

    Re-accredited
    College of Business re-accredited!
The College of Business and our Accounting Department were recently re-accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Every five years, our college goes through a re-accreditation process that involves an in-depth self-study combined with a significant amount of data collection and reports. Our re-accreditation visitation team composed of faculty and administrators from peer schools visited the TTU campus February 18-20 for a site visit. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends were involved with the visit as the team provided an intensive academic audit of our processes and outcomes. We have received verbal feedback that we will be recommended for re-accreditation at the annual meeting in April.
Only 164 other schools in the world have the distinction of having both their college and accounting departments accredited by this prestigious organization. This places us among the top 15% of business schools in the U.S. and in the upper 5% of schools worldwide.

Dr. Don Weinrauch, who has been on the Tech faculty since 1977, was selected for this very important role in the college. The professorship was made possible by a gift from TTU business alumna Faye Halfacre Moore and her husband, Charles, who live in Lexington, Ky.

Magellan exchange program gives TTU students an opportunity to see the world
Ferdinand Magellan, in the 1500s, became the first person credited with circumnavigating the globe, and a student exchange program that bears his name today is helping students at Tennessee Tech University and other select Southern and Midwestern universities explore the world.
TTU is one of only 10 American universities that are member institutions of the Magellan exchange program, which also has about 10 member institutions in Europe and one in Mexico.
“Most of Magellan's partner institutions are in small- to medium-sized communities to help reduce the expense and to provide a more safe environment, yet they are centrally located and near the larger cities,” said Amy Miller, TTU’s study abroad coordinator. “They generally have plenty of public transportation which allows our students numerous opportunities to travel while they are abroad.”

    Distinguished Lecturer
    Oreck speaks to Business students
Tom Oreck visited the College of Business in February as a part of the Distinguished Lecture Series. While in Johnson Hall, he talked to our undergraduate and graduate students.
Mr. Oreck is the President and CEO of the Oreck Corporation, a leading manufacturer of vacuum cleaners and other home appliances made in America and sold worldwide. The Oreck Corporation recently expanded their manufacturing facility to Cookeville.
The Distinguished Lecture Series Program provides students and faculty with an opportunity to interact with prominent executives for an open exchange of views on current issues. Through this vital program, executives are brought into the classroom to offer students first-hand information about the complexities of the business world, while inspiring them to seek new ways to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

BusinessMedia Center Markets Statewide Career Information Website
In cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), the College’s BusinessMedia Center (BMC) has been directing all marketing initiatives for the Tennessee Career Information Delivery System (TCIDS) for the past eight months.

The website primarily targets high-school students and professional counselors by providing information on careers and educational institutions, ranging from professional to non-post secondary options. TCIDS features detailed career descriptions which summarize the duties and responsibilities, educational requirements, and salary ranges of jobs. The website also features free training materials for professional counselors, easy-to-use links to career building sites, a database of all Tennessee institutions of higher education, and self-assessment tools.
