Luther T. Mercer II, is a graduate of Tennessee Technological University with a B.S. degree in political science and earned a law degree at Cecil C. Humphrey’s School of Law in Memphis. While attending law school, he studied abroad at American University in Cairo, Egypt. Upon graduation from law school, he lived in China for two years, teaching for the Shenzhen Education Bureau and at Beijing University’s Changing campus. He holds a certificate in Mandarin Chinese.
After returning to the U.S., Luther served as the University of Tennessee at Martin director of multicultural affairs.
As a Senior Fellow for the National Institute for Law and Equity in Memphis, he completed a project examining prosecutorial discretion in the criminal justice system.
Luther has been a Bethel University adjunct faculty member since 2007, teaching Ethical and Legal Environment of Organizations and Business, also, Government and the International Economy as part of the Bethel Success Program.
In 2008, he joined the faculty of St. George’s Independent School in Memphis as a teacher and coordinator of global education. Currently, he is Director of the Institute for Citizenship at St. George's Independent school which is designed to raise civic awareness and ethical responsibility among the student community. His education and international work experience has enhanced his cultural understanding and his global perspective to recognize the challenges that we face for the 21st century.
