Introduction to Blacksmithing

Description: This is a foundation workshop in which the seven basic forge techniques (cutting, drawing out, upsetting, twisting, bending, punching and welding) will be explored. Participants will complete projects incorporating these techniques and explore personal direction as time allows.

BioAfter receiving an MFA in Sculpture at Southern Illinois University with a focus in blacksmithing, Mike Rose worked as a practicing smith for three years. In 1982, he became a Mastersmith at Silver Dollar City (now Dollywood) and worked there for 25 years. He is currently an Assistant professor of Art at Pellissippi State College teaching sculpture, 3D, ceramics, and blacksmithing.

Description:  In this workshop, participants will learn various techniques to create candle holders with traditional, organic, or contemporary designs. By the end of instruction, they will be able to take home a completed candle holder, as well as possess the skills to accomplish any future designs they may have.

Bio:  Joe Brown is a full-time artist blacksmith working from his forge in Readyville, TN. He specializes in custom forgings for residential and commercial projects.

Description:  Participants will learn the techniques to create at least one dragon head and will have the opportunity to make other animal heads working with one inch square stock.

Bio:  Steve Williamson has been blacksmithing for 22 years and operates a shop in Columbia, TN where he does custom iron work for clients.

 Description:  Participants will have the opportunity to build a padlock in the 10th Century Viking-style by using forge welding, forge brazing, and other forging techniques.

Bio:   Elmer Roush has been smithing for 42 years and has been professional for 25 years. He is experienced with architectural work, production smithing, and making reproductions of museum pieces.

 Description: This class will cover forging techniques in traditional decorative iron, with an emphasis on tool and jig making for the shop. Participants will be able to create a broad variety of tools and use them to create samples of their function and a small finished piece.

Bio:  James Viste was raised on a farm in Wisconsin, received a Bachelors degree from The University of Wisconsin, La Crosse; and a M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. He has worked for studios throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Mexico and Michigan. He is currently the Manager of Edgewise Forge L.L.C., Detroit, MI; and employed as an instructor/technician by the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI. His work has been exhibited in a variety of forums since 1986.

 Description:  Learn to forge steel in knives! Through the mastery of the coal fire and hammer work, the basic blade will be revealed. Emphasis will be placed on accurate forging so that there is a minimum of grinding and filing to refine the form. Fire control and heat treating will be stressed. Participants will be making wooden handles and metal guards for some of the blades. Investigate the basics of a pattern welded Damascus steel knife. The basics of forge welding will be covered, as well as the advantages of layered steel.

Bio:  Bob Coogan is the Professor of Metals at the Appalachian Center for Crafts since 1981. He received his BA from Humboldt State University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He was the recipient of a Fullbright Fellowship in 1988 to teach in England. His work is exhibited nationally and internationally and he had taught workshops throughout the US, Korea, and England.

Description:  Make a Wakizashi sword in carbon steel with hamon. Participants in the workshop will be forging, grinding, and heat treating a Wakizashi - a medium length, Japanese-style sword. There will be discussion about polishing techniques and possibly polishing a window to see the hamon.

Bio:  Howard Clark is a Mastesmith and has been making Japanese-style swords full-time since 1988. He is especially interested in metallurgy and performance. Howard is a member of the Knifemaker's Guild and the American Bladesmith Society.
