Description: This workshop is an exploration of structures built with torn slabs of paper clay. Paper clay offers strength to clay and allows for a range of thicknesses and forms. Build a variety of structures from tall and thin to short and wide and learn why certain structures work or fail. Participants will explore the diverse possibilities of paper clay and learn about the importance of structure when building with slabs of clay.
Bio: Meredith Lewis grew up in Kentucky and is currently residing in Tennessee where she enjoys sharing her love for ceramics. She received her BFA from the Appalachian Center for Craft in 2008 and her MFA from Washington State University in 2012

Description: This workshop will examine styles and techniques that can be achieved using nothing more than a Clairol Hair Applicator, a porcupine quill, and slip and will make a variety of forms to decorate, from tiles to vessels, with a special focus on large platters. Participants will explore composition, feathering techniques, loose and tight lines, symmetry and asymmetry, orderly patterns and chaos, and the anatomy and function of a slip-trailed line.
Bio: Alex Matisse was born to a family of artists and anthropologists. His interest in clay is the meeting place of these two worlds. Alex apprenticed with Matt Jones and Mark Hewitt before building his own kiln and workshop in Madison County, NC. His wood-fired salt glazed work has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the southeast and he was recently as a visiting artist at the 2012 American Pottery Festival in Minneapolis, MN.

Description: Participants will practice their throwing skills and learn to develop larger and better forms and will acquire information on achieving appropriate surface treatments.
Bio: Geoff Pickett is a full-time potter and has been the owner of Farmington pottery since 1990. He received his MFA in ceramics in 1986and his BA in three dimensional design in 1977. Geoff has worked in various potteries and exhibited in England and the United States since 1977.

Description: This class will explore the concept of using modules of one form or object as a building block for more complex form generation. Participants will utilize a range of tools at their disposal as artists to create these forms, including 3D printing, extrusion, and mold making using various materials and methods.

Description: Participants will make templates from which they will create tableware out of slabs such as, but not limited to, salt and paper shakers, sugar and creamers, medium to large serving bowls, pitchers, and platters. Participants will take home bisque ware.
Bio: Melody Tiemann is a clay artist whose work currently focuses on functionality. She is a former artist at the Appalachian Center for Craft and is now working at Mississippi Valley State University.

Description: This workshop will focus on sculpture techniques used to create emotive portraits out of clay. Participants will be taught how to hollow build a bust and sculpt their desired character, with a focus on how to communicate to the viewer the desired emotions through glaze and gesture. Finished greenware can be taken home.
Bio: Andrea Keys Connell is Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Andrea’s work has been featured in a number of national and international publications and she has widely exhibited her work. Most recently, Andrea was featured in Ceramics and the Human Figure. She has had various solo exhibitions at galleries and museums, including the Florida Holocaust Museum and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft.

Description: This workshop will be taught by three ceramic artists with a diversity of approaches. Wheelthrowing, slip-casting, and pinching techniques will be explored to create functional vessels as well as sculptural objects. Whether a first time beginner or an experienced maker looking to expand their practice, this workshop aims to create a dialogue between techniques, materials and process. Stoneware, Porcelain and Earthenware will all be utilized.
Bio: Brice Brisco makes high-fired, wheel-thrown stoneware with traditional southern alkaline glazes in a wood salt atmosphere. He earned his MFA at Ohio University in 2011 and is currently serving as the Artist in residence at the Appalachian Center for Craft.
Natalie Tornatore graduated from Ohio University in 2011 with her MFA in Ceramics. She has recently been a Resident Artist at the Nantucket Island School of Art and Design, a visiting lecturer at Virginia Commonwealth University and a participant in the Surface Symposium at Arrowmont School of Crafts. Prior to graduate school, Natalie completed a two-year fellowship at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. This opportunity afforded her the time to explore a wide range of media and studio practices. Influenced by this array of material studies and techniques and her continued interest in how cultural landscape nourishes our understanding of time and place, Natalie continues to explore ideas in ceramics, mixed media, and installation art.
Ben Stout grew up near Detroit, has a BFA in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute, an MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University, and is the 2012/2013 Fountainhead Fellow in Craft and Material studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. His practice centers on casting methods and ranges from traditional slip casting techniques to site-specific mold making in municipal thoroughfares. He has exhibited at the Sculpture Center in Cleveland, the Kingswood Lower Gallery at Cranbrook and has toured with the Art Stream Nomadic Gallery.
