jessjones.net Description: Discover the interaction of painterly marks and quilted surfaces as you use drawing, printing and painting media along with stitching, embroidery and other sewing techniques. Learn how to integrate multiple techniques into the layered form of a quilt. Participants will expand their definition of a quilt and complete several small art quilts. Bio: Jess Jones studied Painting and Drawing, having devoted equal time to intaglio printmaking. After seeing the patterns of itajime-dyed wool and the painterly quality of surface design, she became interested in the many combined techniques used in fiber, and the conceptual potential of craft. She received her MFA in Fibers in 2007, specializing in quilted structures with digital processes. In addition to Fibers, she has studied book arts and papermaking. Since 2005, Jess has taught foundations, studio, and lecture courses including Drawing, Color Theory, and Art History. She has also taught at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and can be seen in Quilt National 2009: The Best of Contemporary Quilts and 500 Art Quilts published by Lark Books. Jess is currently a visiting lecturer and area coordinator in Textiles at Georgia State University. She is a full time studio artist, designer and instructor. She is the author of "Hand Papermaking" from Lark Books and her work can be seen in over 30 other books and publications. She was one of the first recipients of a Master Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and she was chosen to create the 2011 awards for the Governor's Awards in the Arts. Description: Don’t detract from your beautiful, handmade basket by adding store-bought rims and handles. Participants in this workshop will be able to create rims and handles out of white oak for any basket, or other projects of a similar nature, by learning how to split and carve the wood. Bio: Bobby Edwards is a traditional-style white oak basket maker. He selects his own wood splits and weaves it into beautiful and sought after baskets. *OPTIONAL: One-week workshops are available for 1 TTU elective credit hour; credit hour fees are in addition to workshop fee. Description: Two classes in one! Participants of all skill levels begin the week by learning to weave colorful cotton fabric that shades and changes in color throughout the length of the woven project by using “space-dyed” warps that create exciting and unexpected results in simple as well as complex weaving patterns. Later, approach the dyeing process with a spirit of experimentation and creative license while learning technical aspects for dye application to produce one-of-a-kind, technically sound, color-fast hand-dyed yarn. Bio: Kathrin has been dyeing, weaving and living in the mountains of North Carolina full-time since the late 70's. Her fabrics demonstrate good technique, color flow and texture. She thinks of woven items as comfort food for your home: blankets to wrap up in, pillows to live with, linens to support and frame your meals. Her work is sold through shows, galleries, shops, and custom orders. Kathrin teaches dyeing and weaving nationally at craft schools, fiber guilds and symposiums in far-flung places. July 7 - 12 Dyeing to Spin! Description: Back by popular demand! This introductory level class teaches the pleasure and satisfaction of designing, dyeing and spinning wool yarns. No need to buy yarn again! With demonstrations and guidance from the instructors, participants will learn to dye wool in a rainbow of colors, spin on a wheel and produce one-of-a-kind yarns ready for your next knitting, weaving or crochet project. As time permits, instructors will demonstrate additional spinning techniques to create an even greater variety of novelty yarns. Great refresher for spinners and dyers! Jeanne Whitfield Brady is a Professor in Fibers at the Appalachian Center for Craft. She received her MFA from East Carolina University and has been producing and exhibiting her fabric collages throughout the US and Europe for over 30 years. Jeanne’s work has been pictured in leading art / craft publications and is in several private and corporate collections. Description: Students will learn to create decorative sheets of handmade paper right from the vat. Many techniques will be explored including layering and washes of color, stenciling, watermarking, masking and embossing and low-relief. We will be using assorted size mould and deckles as well as deckle boxes and the vacuum table.

Description: This class is filled with the exploration and uses of artist techniques that include chemical and object rusting, gelatin printmaking, casein milk paint making, gathering and processing local soils into usable paints, transfer methods, image altering, eco dyeing, Shifu thread spinning and more. By week’s end, participants will have made a large book of samples while learning various bookmaking techniques.
Bio: Sandy Webster is an artist currently working in mixed media. In 2011, she received the first place award of $10,000 AUD in Sculpture and Object for the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize at the South Australia Museum. She received her BFA with honors from Western Carolina University and her MFA from Vermont College. Her works have been published extensively and shown internationally in solo and invitational exhibitions. She has recently completed writing a book on pigments from the earth. Sandy has taught, lectured and juried throughout the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
