Fibers Course Descriptions

ART 2610 Introduction to Fibers; 3 credit hours	Introduction to the basics of surface design (dyeing and patterning fabric) weaving cloth on a floor loom. Emphasis is on developing the understanding of safe and successful methods of weaving cloth and patterning fabric.
ART 3610 Intermediate Weaving; 3 credit hours	*Prerequisite:* ART 2610 or permission of instructor. Focus is on the student's technical and design capabilities in woven fiber structures. The use of the floor loom and weave-controlled weaves, double weave, and brocade.
ART 3611 Advanced Weaving; 3 credit hours	Prerequisite: ART 3610 or permission of instructor. Explore complex woven structures such as waffle weave, satin weave and loom-controlled double weave. Warp painting, printing on and off the loom. Developing design concepts into artistic works are emphasized.
ART 3620 Intermediate Surface Design; 3 credit hours	Prerequisite: ART 2610 or permission of instructor. Skills development in a variety of application techniques using natural fiber, fiber reactive dyes, and vat dyes. Monoprinting, stamping, screen printing, Japanese Shibori, indigo dyeing, resists and "burnout."
ART 3621 Advanced Surface Design; 3 credit hours	Prerequisite: ART 3620 or permission of instructor. Skills and concept development in more complex fabric dyeing and manipulating processes. Photo emulsion screen printing, chemical resist, discharge, over dyeing, fabric piecing and manipulation. Emphasis on technical skills and personal artistic development.
ART 3630 & ART 3631 Independent Studies in Fibers; 1-3 credit hours	Individual fiber projects with emphasis on design in weaving or textiles.
ART 4610 Senior Thesis in Fibers; 6 credit hours	Guided individual studio projects leading to a professional level of technical accomplishment in a stylistically coherent body of work. A 12 credit series of Senior Thesis classes culminate in the required final exhibition.
ART 4640 Special Problems in Fibers; 1-3 credit hours	Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Individual studio projects agreed upon by the instructor and student.
