In the Geosciences, the Earth is our laboratory! This means that geoscientists, in general, spend large amounts of time outdoors collecting data, i.e. going on field trips. This set of pages contains photographs of some of us at work and play (The line can be rather fine at times) out in "the field".

Environmental Sedimentology

The Environmental Sedimentology class recently took field trips to a Mississippi River point bar near Memphis, TN and a group of barrier islands on the South Carolina coast near Charleston, SC. The students investigated modern depositional environments and took back sediment samples for analysis in the laboratory.

2003 Spring Break Field Trip: Geology of the Southwest U.S.

In the spring of 2003, six TTU Earth Sciences students and two professors took a ten day field trip to Arizona and Southern California. They hiked the Grand Canyon, drove along the Apache Trail, climbed boulders in Joshua Tree National Park, walked along the San Andreas Fault, and visited Meteor Crater (Among other things).

Geomorphology Field Trips

The Geomorphology class regularly goes on excursions to nearby Window Cliffs, a unique natural feature near Burgess Falls State Park. The area gets its name from a narrow ridge with two holes or 'windows' through it. These form due to differences in weathering rates between the different rock layers making up the ridge. The area has a very complex geomorphic history, and is an ideal classroom for teaching Geomorphology. In addition to photos from Window Cliffs, there are photos from a group of students working on thier Geomorphology class project.

Geoventures 2004 Iceland Trip

This trip was sponsored by GSA, not the department. However, Joe Kington, a TTU Geosciences major, did participate in the trip. These are a few of the pictures he took while in Iceland.
