Second Major and Second Degree

The Second Undergraduate Degree and Second Major Options

To enhance job opportunities, to keep options open for future career development or to satisfy personal interest, students sometimes would like to pursue academic programs in two different areas. This may be accomplished by obtaining a baccalaureate degree in one field of interest and a second degree in another field. Receiving two degrees requires taking a minimum of 30 credit hours more than that required for a single degree. Alternatively, if the subject areas lie within a single college and are closely related, one may obtain a single baccalaureate degree with two majors, also called second major. The second major is an appropriate choice for students who would like to pursue academic programs in both electrical engineering and computer engineering. In the following, the requirements for this option are discussed.

Requirements for a BS Degree with a Second Major

To receive a BS degree with a second major, the student should declare one major as the primary major, fulfill the requirements for the BS degree in that major, and in parallel satisfy the degree requirements for a BS degree in the second major. When the application for graduation is filed, the student will indicate the name of the major and of the second major on the form. The transcript will indicate the two majors for which the degree requirements have been satisfied. However, the degree certificate will show only the name of the primary major.

A student can receive either a BS degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) with a second major in computer engineering or a BS degree in computer engineering (BSCmpE) with a second major in electrical engineering. To satisfy the requirements of both computer engineering and electrical engineering majors with minimum additional hours, the student should choose the electives judiciously.
