Mission and Goals

The organizational structure and mission of the College of Education at Tennessee Tech has evolved since the beginning of the University in 1915, when teacher education was one of the early recognized functions. Currently the College of Education is divided into five separate departments. The departments are Curriculum and Instruction, Health and Physical Education, Music and Art, Counseling and Psychology and the Academic Development Program.
Our college is broader than a traditional college of education. Thus, we have five missions.

1. Prepare caring, competent professionals for a diverse, technological society in teaching, school leadership, counseling, psychology, music and art.

2. Provide a high quality preparation program for doctoral students in Applied Behavior and Learning, Young Children and Families, and Literacy. (Program Planning and Evaluation are soon to be added as the fourth concentration.)

3. Ensure the success of developmental students in their majors.

4. Provide a model childhood development laboratory.

5. Provide cultural events through the Fine Arts for the Upper Cumberland, the state and the region.

Our emphases in the College for 2004-05 will be:

1. 2 + 2 program goals:

  • Implementing 2 + 2 in McMinnville and Chattanooga.
  • Starting the new professional communities at Oak Ridge (both sites).

2. Graduate program goals:

  • Redesigning the master’s programs in Elementary, Secondary, Reading and Instructional Leadership to improve their currency, appeal and consistency with current accreditation standards.
