Introduction

The Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Environmental Sciences at Tennessee Technological University offers a concentration in either biology or chemistry but emphasizes the solution of complex environmental problems using an interdisciplinary approach. Course work is required in biology, chemistry, geology, agriculture, and sociology. This interdisciplinary approach insures that students become aware of a wide range of environmental concerns and that their research includes a breadth of environmental understanding beyond the boundaries of a particular discipline. The goal of the program is to prepare students for careers in research, management, government service, teaching, and other areas where they can make productive contributions to the solution of environmental problems.

This handbook has been written to acquaint you with the graduate program in Environmental Sciences at Tennessee Tech. It covers both the Biology and Chemistry concentrations. Its intended use is for both students and Environmental Sciences Faculty. We hope that this handbook will anticipate some of the problems you may encounter and, additionally, answer a few of the questions that may arise during your stay at Tennessee Tech. It is important to note that it is not intended to act as a substitute for communication between Faculty and Students. You should come and see us any time you have questions that are not addressed in this handbook. Dr. S. Bradford Cook, the director of the Environmental Sciences PhD program, will welcome your questions any time as well.

This handbook contains a great deal of information you will need as well as many forms you will need. It contains regulations, procedures, degree requirements, and many related topics. You should become very familiar with its contents. One of the primary reasons for preparing this handbook was to help you interpret and clarify degree requirements, academic regulations and procedures of the Graduate School of Tennessee Technological University. The final authority on rules and regulations of the Graduate School are disseminated in the Graduate Catalog published every other year and available at the Graduate School office in Derryberry Hall.
