IR Series: Retention Rates for Business Freshmen by Campus Residence Status

This report contains information about Fall-to-Spring and Fall-to-Fall retention rates for first-time freshman business students, by campus residence status at Tennessee Technological University. Each cohort consists of all first-time, full-time business freshmen who entered the University in the Fall semester or the immediately preceding Summer.

Below is a summary of retention rates for three residence categories: Jobe Hall, Other Residence Halls, and Off Campus. These summary rates were calculated as weighted averages for the new freshman business majors of Fall 2002, Fall 2003, and Fall 2004. Following the summary information are Tables 1, 2, and 3, which provide detailed information for the three categories of campus residence status.

Tables 1, 2, and 3 are mutually exclusive. Students are grouped according to their campus residence status and residence hall, if applicable, in their first Fall term. Retention information is about retention at the University and not necessarily retention within the original residence hall or campus residence status, or within a program of study in the College of Business. Some freshmen migrate from the original residence hall to another residence hall, and some freshmen migrate to another program of study.

As shown in the tables below, the Fall-to-Spring retention rate of first-time freshman business students in Jobe Hall was nearly 88 percent, and the rate for other residence halls was nearly 91 percent. The rate for first-time freshman business students residing off campus was 87 percent. For Fall-to-Fall retention, the rate was approximately 66 percent for first-time freshman business students in Jobe Hall and 74 percent for other residence halls, while the rate for off-campus first-time freshman business students was 68 percent.
