Frequently Asked Questions on University Academic Service Scholarship

Q - What is the University Academic Service Scholarship (UAS)?
This is a scholarship that helps to pay for your college bills. For incoming freshmen the award is for 8 semesters. For transfer students the award is for 4 semesters.

Q - How do I apply for the University Academic Service Scholarship (UAS)?
To be considered for the UAS you must apply for admission and complete a scholarship application on Scholarweb before December 15 of the year preceding the year you first plan to attend.

Q - What criteria is used in determining who is eligible for the UAS?
An applicant must be a graduate of a Tennessee high school. Other factors used for determining eligibility are:  ACT score and grade point average. Priority is given to any student who has applied for admissions to TTU by December 15, completed a scholarship applicaton (see above) and has earned a high school GPA is 3.5 or higher and has scored an ACT composite score of 28 or higher.

Q - Is there a work/service requirement?
Yes. This scholarship entails work service on campus for approximately 75 hours per semester (approximately 5 hours per week).

Q - When & where may I pick up my work assignment?
On Registration day in the Mutli Purpose Room in the University Center. We're distributing the service and work contracts differently this year. Because of the number of students that need to pick up assignments, it is necessary to strictly adhere to a distribution schedule. We will be using the same schedule the Bursar's Office is using for Excess Aid check distribution. If you do not have a current I-9 card, you will need to present your Social Security Card and your drivers license. If you have any questions regarding your work assignment please contact pburns@tntech.edu.

Q - Can I pick my assignment?
No. You can however, contact Polly Burns at pburns@tntech.edu and let her know where you would like your assignment to be, but there is no guarantee that she will be able to fulfill your request.

Q - Do I need an I-9 card?
Yes. Everyone that is assigned on campus, in any capacity, must have an I-9 card.

Q - How do I apply for an I-9 card?
Bring your drivers' license AND Social Security card to the Financial Aid Office and fill out the appropriate paperwork. If you are an international student, you must go to the Personnel Office in the basement of Derryberry Hall to obtain your I-9 card.

Q - What 3 things do I need to do to keep my UAS scholarship?
1. Keep your cumulative grade point average a 3.0 or above every semester.
2. Maintain full time enrollment (12 hours) every semester.
3. Perform 75 hours of service to the unversity (60 hours if in Honors HPEO) every semester.

Q - What does my cumulative grade point average have to be to keep my scholarship?
Your cumulative grade point average must be 3.0 or above.

Q - What if my cumulative grade point averages falls below the required average?
You will have one semester of probation after your CGPA falls below 3.0. If you do not raise it to at least a 3.0 you will lose your scholarship. If at any time your CGPA falls below a 3.0 and you have already used your probation semester you will lose your scholarship for any future terms.

Q - What if I drop below full-time status?
The UAS requires that you maintain full time status to keep your scholarship. If you drop below 12 hours in a given semester, you will be removed from the scholarship. You are allowed one probationary period. If you have not yet used your one probationary period, you may use it for dropping below 12 hours.

Q - Once a UAS is lost, can I get it back?
No.

Q - How do I sign up for the "Honors" option rather than have Financial Aid assign me a job?
Call the Honors Office at 931-372-3797 or e-mail at honors@tntech.edu.

Q - What if I'm going on co-op, can my scholarship be put on hold?
Yes, call, come by, or e-mail pburns@tntech.edu in the Financial Aid Office.

Q - Can my scholarship be extended if I have used up all the semesters that was allotted to me but I haven't graduated yet?

Q - Who do I contact if I think I am eligible for the scholarship but no one has notified me that I have been offered the scholarship?
Contact the Admissions Office.
