Spring 2008 Health Fair

On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Campus Recreation will be hosting the annual Campus Wide Health Fair. The mission is to promote wellness, make available free or low cost health services, and provide information in a fun and interactive environment.

Valuable health-related information will be provided by area businesses and TTU departments. A few of the topics that will be addressed are blood pressure, blood chemistries, posture screenings, cancer awareness, healthy heart, and fitness. A partial listing of booths can be found by clicking here.

Cookeville Regional Medical Center will be conducting blood and vascular screenings. Blood work is available from 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM and the vascular screening is available from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 9. Appointments for these two screenings will be taken beginning Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00 AM and can be made by calling the Health Fair Appointment Line at 372-6511. Again this year we will be making lipid profiles available to a limited number of students, 18 years and older, for FREE! A listing of all tests that will be available as well as associated costs can be found by clicking here. You may also download the required Registration Form by clicking here.

Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase. Door prizes and freebies for all attendees will be offered at many of the booths, and special prizes will be offered by Campus Recreation just for student participants! All students, employees, retired faculty, staff, alumni, and dependents are encouraged to attend. I hope that you will take charge of your health by attending the Health Fair on Tuesday, April 8. I'll see you there!

---David Mullinax, Director

Available Tests

Appointments are available by calling 372-6511, starting Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00 a.m.
Registration Form is available by clicking here.

*Students, 18 years and older, wanting to take advantage of the FREE lipid profile should call 372-6511 or 372-6212.*

BLOOD SCREENING

*Lipid Profile
($10) - Measurement of coronary heart disease risk. It gives a measurement for total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL ("good" cholesterol), LDL ("bad" cholesterol), and a coronary heart disease risk factor.

*Comprehensive Chemistry Profile ($15) - A multiple organ survey that includes 26 individual tests. Organs or organ systems that are surveyed include the kidneys, the liver, heart, bones, muscles, and the pancreas. In addition, the profile can predict nutritional status, risk of coronary heart disease, some glandular secretion problems, certain blood disorders, and the acid-based balance of the body. (This test does NOT include HDL and LDL information)

Prostate Specific Antigen
($15) - A marker for cancer or other prostate conditions such as an enlarged prostate. This test is recommended yearly in men over 50 years of age and in younger men with a family history of prostate cancer.

Thyroid Panel ($40) - Human TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) released from the anterior pituitary is the principal regulator of thyroid function. T4 and T3 regulate normal growth and development. They maintain body temperature and all aspects of carbohydate metabolism.

* The lipid profile and comprehensive chemistry profile require you to fast for 12 hours before your blood is drawn. Fasting is taking NOTHING by mouth except water, unsweeten tea or black coffee.*

VASCULAR SCREENING
These test utilize ultasound technology to assess risk for stroke, abdominal aneurysm, and peripheral artery disease. Recommended for anyone over 60, people who have high blood pressure, are smokers or those who have a first degree relative who have had an aortic aneurysm.
Stroke Screening/Carotid Artery ($45) - This test screens the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque buildup. Carotid artery blockage is the number one cause linked to having a stroke.

Abdominal Aneurysm Screening ($45) - this test screens for the existence of an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta. Most individuals with an aneurysm have no symptoms. (Do not eat 2 hours before this screening.)

Peripheral Arterial disease Screening ($45) - This test screens for peripheral arterial disease (plaque buildup) in the lower extermities, which is linked to coronary artery disease.

DISCOUNTED PRICE FOR THE COMPLETE VASCULAR PACKAGE-$109

Prizes for Students and Other Participants

The Fitness Center will be giving out special prizes just for students! Each student will be given a participation form at the Welcome Table located in front of the Weight Room.
