Dr. Debbie Barnard
Assistant Professor of French and Spanish
Dr. Debbie Barnard comes to Tennessee Tech from the University
of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she taught French language and francophone
literature classes. Originally from North Carolina, she received her B.S. from
Western Carolina University
(1991), and her M.A. and Ph.D. in French from Vanderbilt
University (1995, 2003).After finishing her undergraduate degree, Dr. Barnard
spent a year in France as an "assistante d'anglais," teaching English
to French junior high school students. After completing her M.A., Dr. Barnard
spent a year in Tunisia as a Fulbright
Scholar. Besides teaching at Tennessee Tech and UT Knoxville, Dr. Barnard
taught French, Spanish, and Humanities at Johnson
C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC from 1997-2004. She also worked for
Inlingua International
as Director of their Charlotte office from 2003-2004. Dr. Barnard's research
interests focus on francophone literature, with a primary focus on the Jewish
communities of Tunisia. She has published several articles on francophone authors
from various regions of the world (North Africa, the Caribbean, the South Pacific),
and is currently at work on a study of Tunisian literature in French.
