Allergy Shots
Allergy testing is not done at the Tennessee Technological University Health Service. When we feel it is necessary you will be referred to the ENT specialists of allergists in Cookeville.
As a service to our students, allergy shots may be given at the Health Service Office. The physician hours are as follows: Tuedays 9-11:30 a.m., Wednesdays 1-4:30 p.m. Thursdays 9-11:30 a.m.. Please feel free to call the office if you have questions about the schedule. We also post a copy of his schedule in the office.
A Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Clinician is usually at the Health Service from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. If your physician so designates, allergy shots may be given between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the practitioner or clinician is present. Allergy shots are not administered between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. due to practitioner’s lunch hour.
Since we have no record of the results of your allergy tests nor the contents of your antigens, the following rules must be followed to receive your shots here.
- Allergy patients must have received their initial dose prior to coming to Health Services for injections.
- We must have signed orders from your physician to give your shots. (See Forms)
- Bottles must be labeled as to content.
- We must have a schedule from your physician, which states the amount and frequency of your injections.
- You must have a schedule and get your injections at the prescribed interval. To avoid calls to your physician, it is helpful to have his instructions as to decreasing doses when there are reactions or when you do not come in at the scheduled time.
- Your antigens must be labeled with your name and stored in the refrigerator in the Health Service designated for this purpose.
- You are responsible for getting your antigens from the refrigerator, giving them to the nurse, and returning them to the refrigerator
- You must stay at the Health Service 20 minutes after your antigens are given, and the nurse must check the injection site before you leave.
- There is a charge for this service, $1.00 a shot.
The Above rules have been established for your protection. People do have sudden and sometime severe reactions to allergy shots, even when they have taken them for years without reaction. If you do not follow these rules, we cannot give your allergy shots.
