A flu update from Health Services:
As of this morning, thirty-six TTU students have been confirmed with cases of the H1N1 flu virus. A total of 259 students have been treated for flu-like symptoms. Unfortunately, it takes about two weeks for lab results, so most students will be back in class, symptom free, before H1N1 is confirmed.
If you have flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention at Health Services or go home to seek treatment from your family physician. Health Services has Tamiflu and other prescription medication available for treatment.
If you remain on campus, confirmation of any type of flu will require you to remain in your room until you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication (for most this is a 12-48 hour period after receiving treatment). Residential life staff will be informed and assist you.
If you have a roommate who has flu-like symptoms, practice good hygiene, including washing your hands often. Custodial services will also assist you in spraying the room and limiting your exposure.
Students diagnosed with the flu must return to Health Services, whether treated on campus or at home, before returning to class or normal campus activities.
We are requiring all students who have been treated for flu-like symptoms to check in with Health Services for the safety of campus and because we care about the health of each individual student who’s been ill.
In spite of this threat to our students’ health, our number of cases is minimal at this time due to all the steps the Tech community is taking to act responsibly and in the best interest of everyone’s health. We appreciate the support of faculty and staff members who are working with students and are helping us take extra precautions. We are also encouraged by everyone taking hygiene seriously by washing hands and using hand sanitizer.
