Facts About the Department of History at
Tennessee Technological University
- Award-Winning Teachers who care about students. Faculty
have won recognition from students and awards from the College of
Arts and Sciences, the Honors Program, and the University over
the last two decades by eleven full-time faculty who hold the
Ph.D. from nationally known graduate programs. Individual faculty
members hold an average of sixteen years of teaching
experience.
- Up-to-Date Knowledge integrated with classroom teaching.
In the last five years, History faculty completed research on
fourteen books, sixteen chapters in books, two teaching manuals,
twenty-three articles, and numerous reviews and papers at
professional conventions.
- Friendly Faculty who regularly talk with students. In a
1999 survey, History graduates rated "the availability of faculty
to talk informally" with students at 42.4 percent excellent, 36.4
percent good.
- Scholarship Opportunities, Student Activities, and Social
Interaction. The department offers four scholarships. It also
sponsors the History Club, a local chapter of Phi Alpha
Theta--the national history honorary society, public lectures,
trips to historical sites, and student opportunities to present
their research to fellow history students.
- Course Offerings in European, Non-Western, and United States
History. A wide-range of upper division courses offers
students the opportunity to discover the diverse cultural and
human complexity and fascination of the past. Offerings include a
historical methods course, chronological and topical courses in
U.S., European, and Asian history, honors sections, classes in
the World Cultures and Business program, and work for a womens
history and studies minor.

updated every week offers information about TTU history classes,
sites from around the nation and globe, and practical study tips
and job seeking skills. As part of the departmental web site,
faculty members are offering online course syllabi, links,
reading lists, study tips, and guides to writing quality
papers.
- Designated Computer Laboratory to be offered in
cooperation with the Departments of English and Political Science
in Henderson Hall.
- History Alumni rate faculty and classes excellent and become
successful employed citizens. 1999 interviews with history
majors show that 70 percent rated the quality of instruction as
"excellent" and 24 percent "good." History graduates go on to
successful employment and careers in a variety of fields. Some
pursue legal, graduate, and professional training at nationally
recognized programs throughout the country.
