During the Spring 1989 academic term, fifteen students who wished to pursue further their study of Tennessee History formed the Tennessee History Club, renamed The History Club in 1998, (THC) sponsored by instructor Betty Huehls. Initially, students who had taken History 312, History of Tennessee, dominated club membership. But over the years, membership has broadened to include many students with diverse interests, most of whom have taken at least a course in United States history.
The club is committed to propagating information about Tennessee history and life by sponsoring events and speakers as a service to both the local community and the university while recognizing current scholarship about Tennessee history. Membership is open to any student in good standing with the university, faculty members, and spouses.
The THC has four officers and an academic adviser. Members elect officers at the last meeting of the spring term. Current club officers include William MaGahee (president), Marvin Feezell (vice president), Misty Kent (secretary), and Melissa MaGahee (treasurer). Dr. Wali R. Kharif serves as the faculty adviser.
Meetings are held in conjunction with sponsored events, with additional meetings called as needed. For the current term, THC meetings include the following presentations open to the public at no cost.
The History Club of TTU will hold its first meeting of the fall on Tuesday, September 7, 1999. The meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Henderson Hall, Room 114. Annual dues are $10.00.
History Club officers for the 1999-2000 year are:
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and financial support.
The next meeting of the TTU History Club is Tuesday, February 2, at 11AM in Room 114 in Henderson Hall. We will be discussing upcoming events for the semester including the student forum where your history paper on Significant People and Events in History could win you some extra money. As always, you don't have to be a history major to attend the meetings and everyone is welcome. We would like to see you there!

Several suggestions were given for 1998-99 speakers and activities. There was consensus that the club should sponsor or co-sponsor a student forum in the spring (the theme has not been determined) and sponsor a speaker or speakers (subjects of interest are the holocaust, music of Tennessee, and gubernatorial politics). There was discussion of the International Festival be held at TTU in November. Members were asked to think about it and to be ready to recommend how the club might become involved at the next meeting.

Minutes of the History Club of TTU
April 7, 1998
The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. by President Rebekah Tidwell. The agenda and minutes of the March 3, 1998 meeting were approved as circulated.
Reports:
Treasurer Bob Hindsley was not present, however, there is a balance of $122.00 in the treasury. Dr. Kharif reported that the Student Forum was canceled because of lack of participants. This program will be replaced with a presentation by Kharif on "Martin Luther King's Dream: Yesterday and Today." There was some discussion of the canceled student forum. It was suggested that there be closer coordination with Dr. Lindenmeyer (the HIST 341 papers) and with professors who require student papers.
Old Business:
West Payne was nominated and approved as president. Dr. Kharif agreed to continue as secretary until a student could fill the position. The offices of vice president and treasurer remain vacant. Several names were put forth as potential officers: Amy Bonner, Patrick Denton, and Michael Wrye.
New Business:
Dr. Kharif advised members that they would be supplied a "Satisfaction Survey" form. This survey will assess whether the History Department, through its course offerings and faculty advisement, is fulfilling part of its mission at Tech.
Suggestions were solicited from members regarding 1998-99 academic year activities. The club discussed 1) the possibility of working more closely with Phi Alpha Theta, the Honorary Historical Society; 2) developing a tutorial/mentoring program; and, 3) sponsoring a Spring 1999 Student Forum.
No further issues were discussed, and the meeting was adjoined at 11:35 a.m.

Minutes for March 3, 1998 meeting
The History Club of TTU met on Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at 11:00 a.m., in Henderson Hall, room 114. President Rebekah Tidwell presided.
The agenda and minutes of the last meeting (January 20, 1998), were approved.
REPORTS:
Treasurer Robert Hindsley reported a balance of $122.00 in the treasury (with $85.00 set aside for monetary awards for the top three papers presented at the student forum on April 15th).
Dr. Kharif reported on the student forum. The theme is "Gender, Race, Ethnicity, and Class Issues of the Nineteenth Century." The forum has been publicized via the internet and the student newspaper. There have been a few inquiries, however, to date there have been no firm commitments. The event is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 1998, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., in the OVC Room of the University Center and is open to all Tech students. Awards of $50.00, $25.00, and $10.00, respectively, will be given to the paper presenters rated first, second, and third best, with certificates of achievement to be presented to all participants.
Rebekah Tidwell reported on the Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference held in Johnson City, Tennessee, at ETSU. Five Tech students participated and represented the university well.
Dr. Jeff Roberts stated that he is planning a field trip to the U.S. Air Force Museum, located near Dayton, Ohio, with side trips to Yellow Springs (home of Antioch College) and Young's Jersey Dairy. The week of March 20-21, 1998, appears to be the best bet. Roberts encouraged professors to announce this to their classes, and that students and faculty should inform others by word of mouth. Those interested should contact Dr. Roberts.
Persons interested in serving as officers for the 1998-99 academic term should contact Dr. Kharif.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
The meeting of the History Club was called to order at 11:00 a.m., with president Rebekah Tidwell presiding. The agenda and the minutes of the December 2, 1998 meeting were approved as circulated.
REPORTS: Treasurer Robert Hindsley reported a balance of $112.00 in the treasury (not including $10.00 to be deposited, but reflecting payment of an outstanding debt of $25.00).
Advisor, Dr. Wali Kharif, reported on the two programs planned for the spring for the club. The OVC Room of the University Center has been reserved for a 7:00 p.m. February 12, 1998 presentation on Bessie Smith by John Mitchell, and for an April 15, 1998 forum, "Gender, Race, Ethnicity, and Class Issues of the 19th Century." Kharif assumed responsibility for getting word out on the forum. The chapter agreed to fund first, second, and third prizes for best papers with awards of $50.00, $25.00, and $10.00, respectively. The club voted to set aside $85.00 for that purpose, provided that Kharif was not able to raise funds for the awards from other sources.
OLD BUSINESS: The final vote was held on the proposed constitutional amendments, which among other matters as contained in past minutes, would change the name of the Tennessee History Club to the History Club of TTU. Other proposed changes included modifying the purpose, relaxing membership requirements, amending the required officers and their duties (including defining the role of the advisor), eliminating completely Article V: Advisory Board and renumbering the remaining articles, and making other cosmetic changes required by the name change. These changes were approved at the December 2, 1997 meeting. The constitution requires that amendments be approved by a two-third vote of the membership at two consecutive meetings in order to go into effect. The constitutional changes passed unanimously.
There was no new business.
The meeting adjourned at 11:25 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by President Rebekah Tidwell at 11:05 a.m., in Henderson Hall, Room 114 The agenda as circulated and the minutes of the November 4, 1997 meeting were approved.
Reports:
Advisor Wali Kharif reported a balance of $137.00 in the treasury (this would leave $112.00 after payment of an outstanding expenditure of $25 for participation in the Honors Program "Quiz Bowl.").
The November 19th presentation on "Frontier Foods," by Dr. Larry Whiteaker, was well attended. This was the last fall program sponsored by the club. The OVC Room has been reserved for two spring programs:
February 12, 1998, "The Legacy of Bessie Smith," by Mr. John Mitchell
April 15, 1998, "Gender, Race, Ethnicity, & Class Issues in the 19th Century," Student Forum
Dr. Kharif will circulate further information on the student forum.
Old Business
By unanimous vote, the club approved the proposed amendments to the Tennessee History Club Constitution, which would change the name (to The History Club), modify the purpose, relax membership requirements, amend the required officers and their duties (defining the role of the advisor), delete all of Article V: Advisory Board (renumbering the remaining articles), and make other cosmetic changes required by the name change. Since the constitution requires that amendments be approved by a two-thirds vote of the membership at two consecutive meetings, final amendment will be placed on the agenda at the next scheduled meeting in January 1998.
Discussion followed on the April 15th student forum. As indicated above, Dr. Kharif will be responsible for getting information out. If club finances are available, it was decided that monetary awards should be given to the author/presenter of the first, second and third best papers. The amount of these awards will be determined later.
There was no new business.
Meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
The Tennessee History Club met at 11:00 a.m., in Henderson Hall, Room 114. The meeting was called to order by President Rebekah Tidwell. The agenda as circulated was approved, followed by approval of the minutes of the October 7, 1997 meeting.
Reports:
Treasurer Robert Hindsley was not present, so there was no financial report. Dr. Kharif stated that since the last meeting there have been no expenditures, but that the club should reimburse him the $25.00 registration fee that he advanced the club for entry of the THC in the Honors Program sponsored Academic Quiz Bowl. Kharif also indicated that club records should acknowledge that Dr. Calvin Dickinson donated the $25 monetary stipend that accompanied the Betty Huehls Award, and that Kharif has donated two $15.00 gift certificates (one each to be presented to the fall speakers).
The first fall presentation by Dr. Michael Birdwell, "Tennessee in Films (and Films in Tennessee)," was attended by about 45 to 50 persons and was a success. The next club presentation is Dr. Larry Whiteaker's presentation on November 19, "Frontier Foods."
Old Business:
Dr. Kharif went over the proposed changes to the constitution. The main amendment would be changing the name to "History Club of TTU." The revised constitution would further incorporate membership changes that had been approved over the past years to allow for greater student involvement in the club (such as elimination of the Hist 312 requirement for members). Kharif further indicated that the club should consider officially eliminating the requirement of an Advisory Board. Some discussion of this followed, but no consensus was reached. Other proposed changes were basically cosmetic. The members agreed to review the proposed constitutional revisions (supplied to all members by e-mail) and to be ready to initiate action at the next meeting. Kharif reminded the members that the constitution requires a 2/3 vote of the members present at two consecutive meetings to effect a change. Suggestions for additional changes are to be forwarded to Kharif who will then disseminate the final proposed constitution.
The club then discussed a theme for the Spring Student Forum. Two titles were thrown around: 1) The Spirit of Reform in the 19th Century, and 2) Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Class Issues in the 19th Century. The latter theme was approved, and Dr. Kharif agreed to take care of further arrangements.
Present at the last meeting representing the Honors Program was Patti Thorn. She voiced that the Honors Program was interested in finding out more about under-represented clubs at Tech.
The meeting adjourned at about 11:34 a.m.

SUMMARY OF CLUB ACTIVITY IN ACADEMIC YEAR 1996-97
The Club co-sponsored (with the Upper Cumberland Institute and
Women's Center) an October 10, 1996, presentation in Johnson hall
Auditorium, by Randall Norris on "Women of Coal." Prior to
Norris's presentation, Mark Terry, senior history major, was
recognized as recipient of the "Betty Huehls Award," given
annually (in the fall) to the student author of the best research
paper in the History 312 (Tennessee) course during the previous
academic year. The title of his winning paper was, "The Big
South Fork National River and Recreation Area."
On November 2, the Club volunteered for a three-hour shift at the
"Spirit of Tennessee Exhibit." Twelve volunteers (including
non-members) participated. Later in the month, on November 7, in
the Multi-Purpose Room, the Club sponsored a presentation by John
Mitchell, "Of Monkeys, Music and Modernism: The Scopes Trial and
Evolution as Reflected in Early Sound Recordings." Using old 78
rpm recordings and newspapers, Mitchell demonstrated how the
evolution controversy was used to the advantage of song writers
and singers.
The last event sponsored by the Club was a slide show-talk by Ben
Nance (assisted by Randal Williams). The presentation was titled
"Archaeological Investigations at Ft. Blount, Tennessee -
40JK125." This event was held on Thursday, March 20, 1997, at
7:00 p.m., in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Center.
EXPENDITURES
The Club started the academic year with $107.00 in the treasury.
$90 dollars were collected in dues and contributions.
Expenditures amounted to $170.00 (the Club approved expenditure
of $50 to co-sponsor the Annual Phi Alpha Theta-History
Department Picnic planned for April 30). A break-down of
expenditures, including the picnic, is as follows: presenters--
$50.00 to co-sponsor Randall Norris, $15 gift certificate to John
Mitchell, $15 gift certificate each to Ben Nance and Randal
Williams; awards-- $25 gift certificate to accompany Betty
Huehls Award; allocations-- $50.00 to co-sponsor the History
Department annual picnic. This leaves $27.00 in the treasury
after all commitments are met.
Dr. Wali Kharif took the liberty of scheduling 1997-98 Club
meetings for inclusion in the 1997-98 Student Calendar/Handbook.
All meetings are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., in Henderson Hall,
Room 114. The meetings are scheduled for September 2, October 7,
November 4, and December 2, 1997; and, January 20, February 3,
March 3, and April 7, 1998.
Minutes of March 7, 1997 meeting
There was not a quorum at the recent meeting of the Tennessee
History Club so no official actions were taken. Those in
attendance did, however, discuss several matters (some of which
were approved at the 21 January meeting).
Members were advised that there is currently a balance of $107.00
in the treasury, and were reminded that at the January 21,
meeting the Club approved spending $30.00 to purchase gift
certificates for our speakers at the next sponsored event.
Members were reminded that Ben Nance and Randal Williams will
present a club sponsored program, "Archaeological Investigation
at Fort Blount, Tennessee - 40JK125." The presentation will be
held in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Center. It is
scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 1997, and
will last about an hour.
The student forum, "Nineteenth Century Tennessee," is the Club's
last activity of the Spring. It is scheduled for April 15, 1997,
at 7:00 p.m., in the Multi-Purpose Room. Club members are
encouraged to participate and seek the participation of others.
To date, there have been no responses to the call for papers
(which was carried in the _Oracle_ and e-mailed to history
majors, club members, and faculty). A second call for papers is
forthcoming.
Kharif informed those present that the History Department is
planning an educational trip to Atlanta, Georgia for April 18 and
19. Dr. Jeffery Roberts is coordinating this activity, and more
information is forthcoming.
Finally, Kharif reminded members that March is Women History
month and encouraged members to participate. He regretted that
the Club's March 20th presentation conflicts with an activity
sponsored by the Women's Center.
NOTE: The Tennessee History Club's next scheduled meeting is
Tuesday, April 1, 1997. It is important that 1997-98 officers be
elected. If you are interested in holding a position (president,
vice-president, secretary, treasurer) for the 1997-98 academic
year, please contact Dr. Kharif (e-mail: wrk4713, campus mail:
box 5064, or by phone: 372-6322).

Minutes of the Tennessee History Club
November 5, 1996
The Tennessee History Club meeting convened at 11:00 a.m., in
Henderson Hall, Room 114 with President Marvin Feezell presiding.
The agenda as publicized and the minutes of the October 1, 1996,
meeting were approved.
Treasurer Robert Hindsley reported $112.00 in the club treasury.
The club approved exppenditure of $15.00 to purchase a gift
certificate at Ryan's Steak House for John S. Mitchell,
scheduled speaker at Thursday night's presentation, "Of Monkeys,
Music and Modernism: The Scopes Trial and Evolution as Reflected
in Early Sound Recording," sponsored by the club.
Advisor Dr. Wali Kharif reminded members that the club was
sponsoring a presentation by Mitchell (cited above) at 7:00 p.m.,
in the OVC Room. He encouraged members to attend. He also
mentioned that two activities for the spring term are planned:
presentation by Randall Williams, and a student forum. He
mentioned that we need a theme for the student forum. One theme
suggested was "Native Americans in the Southeast."
Old Business:
Members were advised of the success of the "Spirit of Tennessee"
exhibit, and admonished for lack of participation by club members
(the THC shift was handled by American History survey students
and History majors).
The offices of Vice-President and Secretary remain vacant.
President Feezell indicated that he would not be able to continue
serving as President during the spring, leaving that office up in
the air as well. Dr. Kharif encouraged members to consider a
club office. He indicated that the Vice-President position,
reponsible for coordinating programs, is probably the most vital
-though he will continue in that capacity until the position is
filled.
New Business:
There was no new business introduced.
Such Other Matters:
The club approved sending a get well card to Rebecca Tidwell.
The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
=======================================================================
Minutes of the Tennessee History Club of TTU
Tuesday, October 1, 1996, Room 114 Henderson Hall
The meeting was called to order by President Marvin Feezell. The
agenda was approved, followed by approval of the minutes of the
September 5, 1996, meeting.
Dr. Wali Kharif reported $167.00 in the treasury. He then asked
the body to approve the expenditure of $50.00 to aid in
sponsoring Randall Norris's presentation "Women of Coal," and
$25.00 to purchase a gift certificate for Mark Terry, 1996
rrecipient of the Betty Huehls Award in Undergraduate Historical
Writing. Both measures were approved.
Dr. Kharif reported that in addition to Randall Norris's
co-sponsored presentation, the THC was sponsoring a November 7,
1996, presentation by John Mitchell, "Of Monkeys, Music, and
Modernism." He also indicated that in the spring the club will
sponsor a presentation by Randy Williams on Fort Blount", and a
students forum. Plans for these latter activities are on-going.
Members were reminded that the offices of secretary and
vice-president were still vacant. There werre no takers so they
remain such. Members were also reminded of the sponsored trip to
Kings Mountain National Park and Cowpens National Battlefield on
October 25-26. The trip is being jointly sponsored by Phi Alpha
Theta and the History Department.
Dr. Calvin Dickinson advised the members of the Spirit of
Tennessee Exhibit to be at thhe Depot from October 31, 1996 to
November 2, 1996. He indicated that shifts required about 12
volunteers. The club agreed to handle a shift and authorized Dr.
Kharif to coordinate this.
The meeeting adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
Thursday, September 5, 1996
Minutes of the Tennessee History Club
The Tennessee History Club met in Henderson Hall, Room 114 at
11:00 a.m. Chapter sponsor, Wali R. Kharif, conducted the
meeting. The agenda was approved followed by approval of the
Minutes of the April 2, 1996 meeting.
Reports were given. A balance of $107.00 was reported in the
chapter treasury. The programs report indicated that two
programs are planned for Spring 1997: 1) a presentation by Randy
Williams on the Ft. Blount archaeological dig, and 2) the second
annual students forum. However, there are no programs currently
set for the Fall. The members "brainstormed" and several
suggestions came forth including programs on: 1) Mennonites, 2)
Islam in Tennessee, 3)Tennessean Involvement in World War II, 4)
Local History, and 5) African Americans in the Spanish
American/Philippines War. Kharif was authorized to solicit
programs for the Fall. Jeffery Roberts reported on a trip to
Kings Mountain National Military Park and Cowpens National
Battlefield planned for October 25-26. The cost will be $40 per
person, which includes transportation, lodging, and admissions
(quadruple occupancy) or $60 for double occupancy. For further
information contact Roberts at 372-6254.
Members were encouraged to share any fund-raising ideas. It was
suggested that if THC could come up with an annual fund-raising
program, dues collections would not be so essential to operation.
In lieu of fund-raisers dues payment finance club operations
(Betty Huehls Award in Historical Writing, Gift Certificates fotr
Presenters, Annual Picnic, etc.)
The 1996-97 officers were presented as follows:
President - Marvin Feezell
Treassurer - Robert Hindsley
Advisor - Wali R. Kharif
The offices of Vice-President and Secretary are currently
vacant. The former office was left vacant with vice-president
elect William McGahee's departure from TTU. The secretary
position is presently being handled by Kharif.
It was announced that Mark A. Terry is the 1996 recipient of the
Betty Huehls Award for his HIST 312 paper, "The Big South Fork
National River and Recreation Area." Terry will be recognized at
the club's first Fall presentation.
The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
Minutes of the Tennessee History Club, April 2, 1996
The club meeting was called to order for the primary purpose of
selecting officers, providing status reports, and announcements.
Dr. Wali Kharif reported a balance of $157.00 in the treasury.
During the month of March $30 were collected in contributions and
$20 were paid out.
Vice-President Brian Ridgway reported on the March 21, 1996
student forum. Dr. Kharif added that the event was a success and
that this is something that the club needs to do at least
annually, perhaps more frequently if the interest is there.
Dr. Kharif indicated, in response to unanswered questions about a
club trip at the February 6, 1995, that after consulting with Dr.
Roberts it is not feasible to sponsor a trip at such a late time
this term. He suggested that in the future, if members are
sincere we need to vigorously pursue such planning early in the
term, or forego the actual planning and instead join in with
clubs sponsoring such trips.
Members were advised that the club will at some point be summoned
to appear before the SMAC and report on the use of the funds to
bring in historian Jeanette Keith back in February (which was an
overwhelming success). Kharif suggested that a written report of
the use of SMAC funds be prepared by the officers and forwarded
to the committee.
NEW BUSINESS
The following officers were elected for the 1996-97 year:
President - Marvin Feezell
Vice-President - Bill McGahee
Treasurer - Robert Hindsley
Secretary - vacant
SUCH OTHER MATTERS
Members were advised that the Annual History Department picnic
will be hosted by Dr. Kriste Lindenmeyer and Michael Dick on
Thursday, April 25, 1996. More information will be provided
later.
Club members will be provided a "Satisfaction Survey" of the
History Department and course offerings. The survey will help
the Department of History obtain student input regarding its
courses offered at TECH.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 11:30
a.m.
Minutes of the Tennessee History Club, March 5, 1996
The meeting was called to order at 11:05 a.m. with five members
present. The agenda and minutes of the last meeting were
approved.
The treasury report was deferred to the next meeting.*
Members were reminded of the student forum on "Tennesseans at
War" to be held on March 21 at 7 p.m. Members were also
encouraged to come up with ideas concerning fund-raising
activities. A bake sale was suggested as being profitable. In
addition, Feezell encouraged the members to pay their annual
dues.
All new business was deferred to the next meeting. This included
the follow-up report to SMAC, future club programs, and the
annual history department picnic. Some members requested further
information pertaining to a club trip and the annual picnic.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15 p.m.
ADDENDUM:
*Treasury Balance: $147.00
Minutes of the Tennessee History Club
Tuesday, February 6, 1996
Henderson Hall, Room 114
The meeting was called to order shortly after 11:00 a.m. with six
members present. The agenda, as circulated, and minutes of the
November 7, 1995 meeting were approved.
Chapter sponsor, and acting treasurer, Dr. Wali R. Kharif
reported a balance of $127.00 in the treasury. He asked for
chapter approval to set aside $50.00 of that balance to help co-
sponsor the Annual Spring History picnic with Phi Alpha Theta.
This recommendation was appproved.
Programs Report. Kharif mentioned that Thursday night at 7:00
p.m., March 21, 1996, has been reserved for student
presentations. The theme is "Tennesseans at War." More
information is forthcoming on this event.
Old Business. Dr. Calvin Dickinson discussed the impending
presentation by Dr. Jeanette Keith on "Upper Cumberland People."
The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, February 15, in the
Johnson Hall Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The Herald-Citizen, Putnam
County Morning News, and the Community News Channel will be
contacted to provide coverage. In addition, fliers will be
placed in university buildings. Brian Ridgway and Bill McGahee
will work with Dr. Dickinson on publicity.
New Business. Brian Ridgway was confirmed as Vice-President of
the Club, a capacity in which he had been operating since
December 1995. His responsibilities are to serve as programs
chair and to preside over meetings in the absence of the
president.
Members were advised to think about future fund-raising
activities (bake sales, book sales, etc.), and were encouraged to
pay dues. It was suggested that if an annual fund-raising
activity was established, then the Club could concentrate on
making such a fund-raiser a success and then dues payment would
not be so pressing.
The meeting adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

MINUTES OF OCTOBER 3, 1995 MEETING
The Tennessee History Club meeting was called to order by
President Bill McGahee at about 11:10 a.m. in Henderson Hall,
Room 114, with seven members attending. The agenda was approved
as circulated, and minutes of the September 12, 1995 meeting were
approved. This was followed by reports. Treasurer Melissa
McGahee reported $203.76 in the treasury. Vice-President Marvin
Feezell, programs chair, reported that the club had two fall
presentations scheduled. Dr. Calvin Dickinson will speak on "The
Old Walton Road", on Thursday, October 19th in Henderson Hall,
Room 205; Mr. John Mitchell will present a combination talk and
demonstration on "Tennessee in Song and Music", on Thursday,
November 9th, in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Center.
Both presentations begin at 7:00 p.m.
Old Business: Two items of old business were deferred to the
next meeting. These were 1) Club involvement in the Tennessee
Bi-Centennial celebration, and 2) Status of the inquiry into
Appalachian Museum and/or Science & Energy Museum trip(s). These
were to be reported on by Melanie Crabtree who was not present.
Suzanne Lee reported on the Fort Southwest Point exhibit in
Kingston, Tennessee. She reported that the date of exhibit
completion is not known, but that the exhibit will be so limited
in size that it would be most feasible to couple any trip to Fort
Southwest Point with a trip elsewhere, perhaps to the Science &
Energy Museum (which is only about 25 miles away). Discussion
followed and it was decided to look further into this matter.
New Business: Club members were encouraged to be present at 6:15
p.m. in the OVC Room of the University Center on Wednesday,
October 4th for for the group picture to be taken for the Eagle.
Members were advised that that the 1995 recipient of the Betty
Huehls Award is Jason Wayne Smith for his paper "The Great
Domain". He will be recognized at the October 19, 1995
presentation. The club decided to award Jason Wayne Smith with a
plaque and gift certificate. The club further decided to look
into purchasing a master plaque to contain and allow for addition
of the names of all winners of the award, past and future.
Such Others Matters: Members were advised by President McGahee
to think about potential fund-raising activities and bring ideas
back to the club. Members were advised to consider a future club
presentation to be used as a student forum rather than a
traditional presentation. Members were reminded of the Seventh
Annual Southern Festival of Books, in Nashville, October 13-15.
There being no further matters to discuss, the meeting adjourned
at about 11:40 a.m.

$173.76 in the chapter bank account. An additional $30.00 in
dues has been collected but not deposited.
Programs Report: Mr. John Mitchell is scheduled to make a
presentation on "Tennessee in Song" at a date to be set in
November. John was present at the meeting and briefly discussed
a project he is currently pursuing which entails collecting and
cataloging 78 RPM records (and the sheet music when available)
where the state of Tennessee is the subject or is mentioned in
the lyrics. He put out a call for volunteers to aid him in his
research.
Old Business: There was no "Old Business".
New Business: The chapter discussed additional programs for the
1995-96 term. Melanie Crabtree suggested that the club become
involved in the Tennessee Bi-centennial celebration. Melanie
agreed to check with Dr. Calvin Dickinson regarding Putnam County
involvement and to ascertain specifically what the club could do.
Melanie volunteered to look into the feasibility of the club
sponsoring a trip to the Appalachian Museum alone or combination
with a tour of the Science and Energy Museum at Oak Ridge.
Suzanne Lee suggested that we consider a trip to Kingston where
Fort Southwest Point is being rebuilt. She volunteered to check
further on this matter. Dr. Kharif is to contact Dr. Oplee
Walker about a presentation on "Ghost Stories".
The club moved to honor Mrs. Betty Huehls, original sponsor and
founder of the club, by naming the annual award for the Best
History 312 Paper the "Betty Huehls Award".
