At any time during the semester, you may report and update the progress you are making toward completion of your HPEO Unit options. The deadline for reporting progress is the last day of classes in each semester

Procedures for participation in COMMUNITY SERVICE

Directions for FRESHMEN

To update the 20 hours of activities, do the following:

  1. OBTAIN a supply of "purple forms," the 1/2-sheet Activity Reporting Form available in the Honors Office.
  2. TAKE a form to each activity you attend.
  3. COMPLETE the form and get a SIGNATURE from a person who is running, managing, or working at the event.
  4. WRITE a brief description of the event on the back of the form, describing the event and your opinions and reactions.
  5. BRING the form to the Honors Office NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK following the event.

To update "Faculty/Staff Assistant":

  1. You and your supervisor need to keep track of your work hours on your own. Keep track of dates and hours of service.
  2. Make sure that your weekly schedule of hours allows you to complete your 20 hours well before the end of the semester.
  3. When you have finished your 20 hours of service,  ask your supervisor to send a brief email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , indicating that you have successfully completed your 20 hours of service.
  4. When you have finished your 20 hours of service, send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In that email, include a summary paragraph describing your service and your own opinions, reactions and feelings about it. In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 1".

To update "Serve on ASG Committee" (Freshman Unit 3):

  1. When you have completed your committee service for the semester, write a paragraph describing your committee service, and your feelings about it. Email that paragraph to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  In the subject line of the email, put your own name and the phrase, "Unit 3".
  2. Your committee chair will validate and approve your committee service for the semester.

To update the Participate in 20 hours of community service option (Freshman Unit 3):

  1. During the semester, use the forms provided by the University Service Center to keep track of the hours you have served.
  2. When you have completed your service hours, write a summary paragraph for the unit, describing your service experience.  Send that paragraph in an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 3".
  3. Ask Michelle Huddleston, director of the University Service Center, to send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , indicating that you have successfully completed your community service hours.

Directions for UPPERCLASSMEN

To update the Big Sib option (Upperclassman Unit 1):

  1. On your own, keep track of your contacts with your little sibs, and report them on the form provided by the Big Sib chairs.
  2. Submit the completed form(s) to the Big Sib chairs, as directed, by the agreed deadline.
  3. Write a paragraph summarizing your Big Sib experience for the semester.  Send that email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 1".
  4. At semester's end, Big Sib chairs will certify that you have completed the unit,  after reviewing the submitted forms.

To update Other Options in Unit 1 (Upperclassman):

  1. You and your designated supervisor need to keep track of your service hours on your own. Keep track of dates and hours of service.
  2. When you have finished your service,  be sure to complete the following two steps:

  4. Write a paragraph summarizing your service and any feelings or reactions you have.  Send that paragraph to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 1".

To update Chair an ASG Committee (Upperclassman Unit 3):

  1. Near the end of the semester,  write a summary paragraph of your achievements as chair, including any interesting insights achieved or problems encountered.  Send this paragraph in an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 3".
  2. You do not need to do anything else.  The Steering Committee chair will review your service, and verify your successful completion of the semester as committee chair.

To update the Officer for a campus organization (Upperclassman Unit 3):

  1. Start and keep a list of the meetings and other organization events that you lead and participate in. 
  2. On that list, for each event, list the date, how long the event lasted, and a brief description of what the event was.
  3. Near the end of the semester, before the HPEO deadline, submit the list in Word format (.doc file) as an email attachment.   4. Ask your organization president to send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , indicating that you have successfully completed the hours that you are reporting.  If you are the president, as your organization faculty sponsor to send the email.

To update Coordinate a Special Project (Upperclassman Unit 3):

  1. Near the end of the semester, before the HPEO deadline, ask your designated project supervisor to send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , indicating that you have successfully satisfied all the agreed-upon obligations and tasks for the project.
  2. Near the end of the semester, before the HPEO deadline, write a paragraph summarizing your project, its impact on your education, and any other comments about it.  Send this email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 3".

To update "Serve on two ASG Committees" (Upperclassman Unit 3):
For EACH of the two committees that you have served:

  1. When you have completed your committee service for the semester, write a paragraph describing your committee service, and your feelings about it. Email that paragraph to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the subject line of the email, put your own name and the phrase, "Unit 3".
  2. Your committee chair will validate and approve your committee service for the semester.

To update any of the Unit 2 (Scholarly and Professional) Options (Upperclassman):

    1. Near the end of the semester, before the HPEO deadline, ask your designated project, research, or conference supervisor to send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , indicating that you have successfully satisfied all the agreed-upon obligations and tasks for the scholarly activity, research, or conference.
    2. Near the end of the semester, before the HPEO deadline, write a paragraph summarizing your project, research, or  presentation; its impact on your education; and any other reactions to it.  Send this email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In the subject line of the email, put your name and "Unit 3".
    3. If you have participated in "Getting Started in Research (GSIR), confirm with Dr. Barnes or Mr. Clark that you have completed all requirements for GSIR.
