The Chat is an online, interactive tool where students and instructors can communicate in real-time discussions.

Use This tool For:

  • Virtual Office Hours
  • Small Group Discussion
  • Role-play Simulations
  • Private Discussion
  • Team Meetings
  • Question and Answer Sessions

Create A General Chat

  1. From the available chats window, select the CREATE CHAT button located in the top right corner.
  2. A create chat page will show up, select the General Chat option and click next. Title your chatroom and give it a description. Click next to continue.
  3. Your chat room will now be created and listed under the Course Chats.

Create A Private Chat

iLearn users have the ability to create a private chat in which they are able to select who is able to participate in the chat. This is particularly useful for groups because they have the ability work and meet in private.

1. From the available chats window, select the CREATE CHAT button located in the top right corner.
2. A create chat page will show up, select the Personal Chat option and click next. If you want this chat room to remain indefinitely, check Persistent. Click Create.

3. Title your chatroom and give it a description. Click next to continue.

4. Add participants in the chat by selecting the ADD button..You can either type in the username of someone you know, or choose classmates from your class. Click ADD to add these users to your chat.

5. Once you have entered all the participants, select the ENTER CHAT button to enter the chat.
6. Your private chat will now be displayed in the Available Chats List under Personal Chats.
7. To edit your chat room select the edit chat buttonedit chat button located next to your personal chat under options .Here you will be able to add/remove users from your chat room as well as changing the title and description of the chat.
8. If you wish to delete your chat room, you can do so by selecting the delete chat buttondelete chat button.

Enter A Chat

1. Select the Chat link in the navigation bar
2. A list of available chats will be displayed. Click the name of the chat room you would like to join.

3. You will now be taken to the chat. All participants currently in the chat are listed on the left side of the page. All chat text will appear in the large area to the right..

Participate In A Chat

1. Locate the bar at the bottom of the chat window. Click inside the bar and begin typing your message.

2. Once you are satisfied with your message, select the ADD button.

Your text has now been added to the chat room for all users to see

Change Your Chat Room Identity

Participants have the ability to change chat room identity to accommodate any desire to go by a different name. (Ex: Jonathon Smith changing his name to John Smith)

Note This will not change your D2L login name, the new identity will only appear in the chat room.

To change your chat identity
1. Enter a chat room
2. Click the Change Chat User Identity button ( change chat user identity button) located next to the pull down window. chat pull down window
3. A popup will now appear with your name, enter the desired chat identity that you wish to go by and click submit.
4. A message will indicate that your chat identity has been successfully changed.

You can change your username appearance by selecting the color, bold, and/or italic buttons. Click submit when you have selected the appropriate changes.

Exit a chat

To exit a chat, select the EXIT CHAT ROOM button located in the top right corner of the page.

Viewing a chat room archive

1. Select the archive buttonarchive button next to the chat title.
2. A list of all available archives will be shown, newest archives will be listed first.

Click the archive date that you wish to view, and its contents will be displayed.

Student View of your tool or course

If you would like to view what your course or tools look like in the eyes of a student, you can do so using the Role Switch tool from the Course Home. By changing your role to "Student" you can navigate your class and see the course as a student would. Please note that under the student role you will be unable to view the gradebook, take quizzes, or view any items with conditional releases. Once you are finished using the student role, you can switch back to your instructor role by going back to the role switch tool in the Course Home and selecting "My Default Role."
