CPS (Classroom Response System)


CPS Second Generation Radio Frequency
The CPS Classroom Performance System by eInstruction has been adopted as the university standard at TTU.
CPS™ RF allow instructors to easily interact with an entire class, while capturing real-time assessment data with which to gauge comprehension and adjust instruction accordingly. CPS can automate and streamline administrative tasks like taking attendance and grading quizzes or tests.
Request your free faculty kit online. The CPS administrator will contact you to pickup your kit as available.
Installation
- Download CPS Version 6.56 software from eInstruction's website. (It is highly recommended that you use the 5.62 legacy version of CPS at this time.
- Create a Database (View Video)
- (It is recommended that you create one database to manage all of your courses. File structures can be created within the database for organization)
- Open CPS from your desktop icon and follow the wizard for creating a database.
- This database can be transfered to a flash drive for portability to be used on any computer that has the CPS software installed.

Create a Class (View Video)
- Open CPS from your desktop icon
- Select the Classes Tab.
- Select New button >> Class
- Follow the steps to create your class
- Upon selecting no for the question: "Have you taught using CPS in the past?", you will be required to enter the Instructor Setup Code. Contact the CPS Administrator, Stacey Plant at 372-3675 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
- Complete class information.
- Class Start Date: The first day that students can register for the class
- Class End Date: The last day of class. Don't forget to include finals week.
- Notification Date: indicates the first day on which you will begin to receive notifcation emails each time a student registers for your class.
- Attendance Options - Choose whether you would like to access attendance information through the Reports Tab or the Gradebook Tab in CPS.
- When you see the notification window stating that your class has been created select the Print button.
- Save the generated Word document with your Class Key to print and handout or make avialable online for students.
- Keypads
- Students can purchase a keypad from the Bookstore. Price: $24.00
- If the keypad is purchased from an individual they will need to follow steps outlined under the Advanced tab.

- Create a CPSOnline Account
- Go to www.einstruction.com
- Select the CPSOnline login link at the top of the web page.
- Select link to Higher Ed Students.
- Select Tennessee Tech University from the drop-down menu.
- Select link to Create New Account and follow instructions. This will lead to the purchase of enrollment code.
- Enroll in a class
- Enter the class key provided by your instructor.
- Student ID field can be left blank. Do not enter your Social Security number.
- Enrollment Codes can be purchased in the University Bookstore or online from eInstruction
- Bookstore price per semester: $20.00
- eInstruction online price per semester: $13.00
- eInstruction online price lifetime: $35.00
- This is a special offer and only offered once. If the student chooses to purchase the semester only option the lifetime enrollment will not be available in the future.
- Plug in the CPS receiver to an available USB port on your computer
- Open CPS from your desktop icon
- CPS will automatically detect your receiver settings
In the event that the receiver is not detected...
- Select Settings from the menu at the top
- Select Delivery Options tab
- Select Receiver
- Click Detect CPS Receiver button. A Receiver Setup window appears and will alert you when a receiver is detected.
- Select OK
- Verbal Questions (View Video)
- Select the Engage tab and Lessons and Assessments tab
- Select Engage
- In the CPS Verbal Question Setup window choose your session options
- Be sure to select the correct Class under Class Options
- Click OK. The Verbal Engage toolbar appears
- Click Verbal button and select a question type from the drop-down menu
- Ask your question verbally or display a question with your preferred application like Power Point or Windows Journal.
- You can capture a picture of your screen by selecting the Snapshot button. The image is stored in the same location as the CPS database and displayed in reports with corresponding responses.
- The Content Delivery bar appears. Click the Start button
- Students may respond during time designated.
- Click the End button
- To define the correct answer, check the box Show Correct
- Choose the correct answer from the drop-down menu.
Fast Grade Option (View Video) - You can create a FastGrade answer key, distribute hard copies to the
students, and have them respond for a quick grade.
- Click the Prepare>Lessons and Assessments tab.
- Select the database name or lesson name that you want to create a FastGrade
lesson in. - Click New in the Home group
- Select the FastGrade menu item. The Lesson Attributes window opens.
- Type a name for your FastGrade lesson in the Title box.
- Click OK.
- Click the blue answer button that corresponds with the question type and correct
answer for each question. - Repeat step 7 until you‘ve entered every question into the CPS FastGrade window.
- Click OK. The Prepare>Lessons and Assessments tab appears with the FastGrade lesson
name in the lesson side of the window.
Student Paced Mode (View Video)
- Provide students with a printed copy of the lesson or assessment you want them to take.
- Students can either answer the questions on paper and then input the results with their CPS response pads or answer the questions as they go.
- Click the Engage>Lessons and Assessments tab.
- Select the lesson you want to engage by clicking in the check box before the lesson name.
- Type a title, choose a session type and select a class in the Engage Options group
- Click Assessment Setup in the Engage Options group. A list of delivery options appears.
- Select Student Paced from the list of delivery modes.
- Click Engage in the Assessment group. The CPS Feedback window appears. (See next page for the difference between IR and RF systems.)
- Click Start to begin the response cycle.
- Click End to end the response cycle.
- Click Yes to save the data and end the session.
Multiple Lesson or Exam Versions (View Video) - Engaging multiple lessons is especially helpful when you would like
to use multiple versions of a test.
- Click the Engage>Lessons and Assessments tab.
- Select the lessons from the lesson side (left or top window) of the screen you want to engage. A checkmark will appear in the box in front of the lessons you selected. You will notice “Engaging Multiple Items” appears in the Title box in the Engage Options group.
- Click Assessment Setup in the Engage Options group. A list of delivery modes appears.
- Select Student Paced from the list of delivery modes. Please refer to the Student Paced Mode section for more information on Student Paced mode.
- Click Engage in the Assessment group. The Test Version window appears.
- Students will enter the alpha character on their response pads that correspond to the lesson they wish to take. For example, in Figure165,if a student wishes to take Quiz 1, he or she will push A on their response pad. If a student wishes to take Quiz 2, he or she will push B on their
response pad. - Click OK. The Feedback Grid window appears.
- Click Start. The response cycle begins.
- Click End to end the response cycle.
- Click Close to close the Feedback window and return to CPS.
Folders (View Video)
- Select the Prepare tab and Lessons and Assessments tab
- Select the Database Name in the left pane (the Lesson Side)
- Select New in the Home group
- From the drop-down menu select Folder
- Name the folder and click OK
- Select the Prepare tab and Lessons and Assessments tab
- Select the Database Name in the left pane (the Lesson Side)
- Select New in the Home group
- From the drop-down menu select Lesson. The Lesson Attributes window appears.
- Name the folder
- Choose a delivery style to support various assessment answer options
- Add a picture file by selecting the Browse button. This will appear when engaging a lesson in the There It Is! mode. See Advanced tab for more details.
Questions (View Video)
- Select the Prepare tab and Lessons and Assessments tab
- Select the Lesson or folder in the left pane (the Lesson Side)
- Select New in the Home group
- From the drop-down menu select Question. The Question Author window appears.
- Select the Question Type in the Format group
- Add Question and Answers
- Select the checkbox next to the correct answer
- Select Save and Move to the Next Question
- Repeat 5-8 for additional questions
- Select Save and Close.
