Mother and daughter share special TTU, Roane State graduation

Imagine the best day of your life, a day when you accomplished something amazing. carol mandi

Remember your loved ones’ faces on that day and how their expressions reflected their pride in you. Let the memory sink in. Now, imagine that on that best day, your loved ones were not there.

Carol Price and her daughter, Mandi, faced that prospect. After years of hard work, they were ready to graduate from college — Carol from Tennessee Tech University and Mandi from Roane State Community College. The ceremonies were on the same day, which meant Carol and Mandi would not see each other, and their family would be divided on one of their best days.

Tennessee Tech's Kevin Murphy drafted 47th overall by Utah Jazz6 28 murphy draft

NEW YORK -- Tennessee Tech's Kevin Murphy heard his name called a little after 10 p.m. Thursday night, the 47th overall pick during the second round of the NBA Draft, when he was selected by the Utah Jazz.

Murphy, a high-scoring guard from Atlanta, Ga., became the ninth Golden Eagle to be drafted and the first since John Best in 1993.

Murphy's selection at No. 47 is the third-highest in school history behind Jimmy Hagan, the 18th pick in 1960 by the Minneapolis Lakers, and Best, the 36th pick by the New Jersey Nets.

With the Jazz, Murphy will play in the NBA's Northwest Division of the Western Conference, which includes NBA Finalists Oklahoma City. In that division, Murphy will also get the chance to face another former OVC standout, Kenneth Faried, with the Denver Nuggets.

Persistence is key to an Interdisciplinary Studies' graduate's achievements

Pepper Owens could tell you a thing or two about work-life balance.PepperOwens

For years, she worked full time and took college courses during her lunch break, all while raising nine children. She ran out of courses before she accumulated enough credits for a bachelor’s degree. She had about 80 hours of credit, across a variety of disciplines. No one discipline had enough hours for a degree. She gave up.

In 2004, TTU’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies reached out to her. Owens enrolled in interdisciplinary studies through the Regents Online Degree Program and finished her degree in the fall of 2007. Then she lost her job just as the economy was starting to turn sour.

In 2008, she went on to start a master’s degree in mental health counseling. She got her second degree from Tennessee Tech in May 2011.
