Advanced Degrees Programs

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies & Extended Education and the College of Education at Tennessee Technological University are proud to offer off-campus graduate programs for both the master's and Specialist in education degrees, and we are excited that you are considering pursuing an advanced degree with TTU. We strive to work with our students to provide a quality education in as convenient a manner as possible. Please take a few minutes to read the following information that will be important to you as you begin your graduate program.

What is a cohort group?
A cohort group is a group of at least twelve graduate students in an off-campus setting who wish to pursue advanced degrees with the Graduate School of Tennessee Technological University. We recommend that the group proceed as a unit through their program of study.

Will I have to drive to TTU's campus for classes?
Generally, no. That is one of the primary advantages to pursuing your advanced degrees with TTU. As a member of a graduate cohort group, you will be able to do most - and in many cases, all - of your program in or near your home county. This gives you more time for study, work, or family activities by reducing travel time.

Will I have to write a thesis?
Graduate programs in Education offer both thesis option and problem options as the research requirement for the degree. Students are encouraged to consult their faculty advisor for assistance in making this and other degree-related decisions.

How long will it take me to complete an advanced degree?
Off-campus graduate degree programs are usually completed in five or six semesters. Typically, cohort groups take two classes per semester, but they may choose to take fewer courses per semester. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies & Extended Education tries to provide the programs as students request them and also considers availability of faculty and facilities when planning courses.

How much will it cost?
The current rate for graduate fees for in-state residents as of July 2005 is $307 per credit hour. Master's degree programs are generally 33-35 credit hours, and specialist in education programs are generally 30 credit hours. Fees are subject to change as determined by the Tennessee Board of Regents and can be viewed on the Tennessee Tech University web site at www.tntech.edu/bursar/fees.html

Are classes ever cancelled due to snow or bad driving conditions?
Sometimes, yes. As a general rule, if the facility at which your class meets is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Factors such as the instructor’s ability to get to the class location and predictions of approaching bad weather are vital in considerations of canceling classes. Class closings and cancellations will be posted on the ISEE web site at www.tntech.edu/isee. Please consult the TTU Graduate Catalog available online at www.tntech.edu/gcat for the official policy on inclement weather.

How soon do I have to apply for admission to the Graduate School?
Once you have made the decision to pursue your advanced degree, we encourage you to file your application as soon as possible.
