Installing Critical Updates from Microsoft
for Windows Operating Systems

In light of continuing threats of new computer worms, we would like to explain how you can be sure that your machine has all the necessary critical updates which are available from Microsoft.  Please note if you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP,  you must have administrator privileges in order to accomplish these steps.  This should be the case for most users.  Please contact MicroSupport or your College Contact if you need additional assistance.

Please note that in Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Critical Updates should be set to occur by default under the Security Center.  See Service Pack 2 for more information.

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • From the Tools menu, select Windows Update
  • If a box appears asking your permission to install Microsoft Update software click yes.

  • At the Windows Update site, click on Scan for updates.

  • Any Critical Updates and Service Packs needed will be listed
  • If you are up-to-date, there will be none to pick.
  • Click on Review and Install updates

  • Click the button Install Now.

  • Follow the instructions given to you and RESTART your computer when indicated.
  • Be sure to install ALL Critical Updates and Service Packs listed.
  • Generally any Service Packs will have to be installed first and separately from the other updates listed.
  • If the online directions tell you that a particular item must be installed separately, install it, RESTART your computer, then open Internet Explorer again and repeat the process outlined above until all critical updates and service packs listed have been installed.
  • Other updates listed are optional. It is only those listed under CRITICAL UPDATES that you MUST install.

Microsupport has been working to set all machines to do this automatically, but please follow the steps above to be sure your machine is fully protected.
